Can someone share abit more of Catholic High’s IP? Heard from friends that their IP isn’t as established as other schs.. wonder how much of that is true..

If at PSLE, chose O level, possible to opt for HMT when not indicated in the option form? Does CHS encourage students to take HMT or only those who r officially given this option?

Cat High O level — eligibility to take HCL is determined by your eligibility letter.
So if not eligible, you will be taking CL.
If eligible, you can opt to do either HCL or CL.
So to answer that last question, it is “only those who are officially given this option”.

Cat High IP — I guess when they say not as established, it just means they are one of the “youngest” ones to run IP. But even as one of the youngest ones, it has been quite many years since it started (was it sec 1 2013?), I think first 2 batches are in the U by now.

So it’s in a way different from the likes of Maris n some others where they encourage the students to take HMT even though not officially offered in the PSLE form? It’s a no no rather than encouraged to have..

I think it is good to just follow the eligibility, HCL is much harder than CL, and for my relative who dropped HCL in sec 4, and is now doing H1 CL in JC, the feedback is JC CL is much easier than Olevel HCL. Meaning there is no good reason to struggle with HCL-O, just to be able to take 2 points off and skip CL-JC. If you have cca and affiliation, then you cant make use of the HCL 2 points also. Of course it depends on the individual and the severity of the struggle. And that is just one feedback, sample size is very small. I think if you have a child in sec sch, you can easily find out the difficulty level of o-cl and o-hcl.

          Yes,

O-level (HCL) is a lot more tougher, much more challenging than O-level (CL).
A substantial amount of time is required, to dwell into the individual HCL components, to master them.

O-level (HCL) is a far cry, from PSLE (HCL), because
PSLE (HCL) is merely an extension of PSLE (Standard CL).

But, when come to O-level (HCL), it is no longer merely an extension of O-level (Standard CL).
It goes way beyond that, much more deeper, hence, challenging.

On one hand, it is good to clear O-level (HCL) asap,
so that when students reach JC1, students no need to spend (waste) time, at least minimum > 100+ hours just to study JC1 (CL)

          In this regard,
between O-level (Maris Stella High) vs. O-level (Catholic High), inside the department of Higher Chinese

          - Maris Stella High is being considerate, because she (MS) overwritten MOE eligibility letter in that, as long as her students have scored minimum grade A (in PSLE Standard Chinese), all Sec 1 students are given the right to proceed go and learn HCL for next 2 years. Then, when reach the end of Sec 2, re-assess their progress made thus far, re-establish a check point, see if students are ready to sit for O-level (Standard CL), in Sec 3.

          2 scenario

          a)
If reach end of Sec 2, MS students are not ready, then don't take.

If they are not ready, means they will sit for O-level (Standard CL) only in Sec 4.
But, don't forget that they had already been well trained and exposed to learning lots of HCL stuff, for the past 3 years duration. This will stand them in good steed, to do well in their final Sec 4 O-level (Standard CL).

          b)
But, if reach end of Sec 2, MS students are ready, let them sit for National exam (O level, Standard CL), in Sec 3.

          In sharp contrast,
Sec 1 students in Catholic High differ from Sec 1 students in Maris Stella High.

If students don't obtain that important MOE Psle printed out eligibility letter, then they are not allowed to take up HCL from Sec 1 onwards. Unless at end of Sec 1, they do well overall, not just in one single subject Standard Chinese only. Then on a case-by-case basis, they will be evaluated, may be given the chance (opportunity), to start learn HCL, from beginning Sec 2 Term 1. However, this imply that the students would have already missed out one entire (whole) year of learning HCL in Sec 1. Therefore, need to catch up fast, whatever they had missed out.

Due to such a difference that arises,
          Suppose I am a P6 student (boy).
If I am really keen to learn HCL right from beginning Sec 1, but Moe didn't give me that crucial eligibility HCL letter because I have failed to fall within Top 30% of entire PSLE cohort

          But

if my Tscore enabled me to meet the Cut off point of either school, given a choice, I will gladly select Maris Stella High, not select Catholic High

          because

          Why should I,
as a Sec 1 student, waste one precious whole year missing out learning Higher Chinese, since I target to clear O-level (HCL), by the end of Sec 4 ?
Inside that one whole year duration of Sec 1 HCL, so many things would have been taught (covered) by gao-hua laoshi already

            Besides Maris Stella High,

Chung Cheng High (another school) Chinese department also overide MOE Psle Eligibility letter, ie.
let all her Sec 1 students learn HCL, from Day 1

Chung Cheng High (Main) COP : 244

            https://sis.moe.gov.sg/SchoolDetails.aspx?schoolCode=7104

Chung Cheng High (Yishun) COP : 241

            https://sis.moe.gov.sg/SchoolDetails.aspx?schoolCode=7105

will be good, if more SAP Secondary schools Chinese department can overide the Moe Psle students' eligibility letter

Can I check if any parents have feedback or recommendations of any tutors/tuition centre for students in IP? As understand, IP in each school may be different in terms of how they cover the syllabus, do parents, therefore, go for 1-1 tuition instead? I am not able to find any parent’s sharing on tutors/tuition centres specific for IP. Perhaps I might have missed them. I would very much appreciate if someone can share the link if there is already one. Thanks.

Try asking in the thread for the specific school? There are probably many students having tuition, and some centres will have classes tailored to specific schools.

Just curious. For parents with kids in IP, is it just my wrong impression - I seem to think tuition was far more prevalent in the primary school years, than in Sec Sch (IP). Maybe I am just blissfully unaware, haha 🙂

I think it is more prevalent in Pr school, with many taking more than 1 subject, but even in Sec school (IP or not), quite a few students take some tuition. Not everyone is strong across the board, so they may need help in a specific subject. Of course, some take tuition in more than 1 subject too. For some, it's just a crutch they (or their parents) have got used to. I know some parents who send kids to tuition so that they have more structure to their day and don't \"waste time\" - not a good way to teach time management, in my opinion, but it may be the only way if there is no-one to guide or supervise at home. Many kids can still be immature and irresponsible in the lower sec years, and even later.
