Hi , my boy choose IP school after PSLE, now he is in year 2 , but he’s struggling and it seems the IP system may not be suitable for him, also the higher Chinese is an obstacle . We are considering to transfer him to a mainstream school, to do O Levels where it’s more structured and there are more options after O levels . Is it possible to transfer , as he is not a DSA student ?

He can transfer as long as the school has a vacancy to take him. Check directly with the school you want to transfer him to.

For the Higher Chinese, he should ask if he can switch to Chinese in sec 3.

Yes, can seek transfer asap, since he didn't accept any DSA offer

            1) should seek transfer back to O-level track quickly, don't wait anymore,

The earlier he raise this request, better for him, in case got some other similar IP students inside his same school, also in the same situation as him, ie. looking to transfer back to O-level track, if let's say he currently in a dual-track IP school (eg Victoria Sec or Catholic High), and as you know, O-level seats inside dual-track run IP schools are very precious, many students want

            2) concurrently, apply transfer to some other O-level Non-dual track schools as well,
ie. speed up the Transfer process

But, choose those schools, where your son already have some Sec 3 subject combination in mind

            eg

            find out first,
what are the Sec 3 subject combination available first, in those schools your son keen to seek transfer, even before submit Transfer Applicaiton form.

            eg
say, based on his interest, he want to do Full (Pure) Sec 3 Geography (Humanities), not Full History, then make sure that school he seeking Transfer into, got this subject combination, if say, he's taking 2021 Sec 3 (Double Sciences, Double Humanites) combination, which is very popular, because is safer to take Double Humanities nowadays, as taking single Humanities subject is very risky at O-level

if not sure, request to speak to the VP (Academic), they will know what subject combination, the school can offer, in Upper (Sec 3 and 4, O-level)

this Sec 3 subject combination thing is very important, because
once he successfully Transfer over into the new school, come (by) next year 2021 January, another half a year more to go from today, your son will be in Upper Sec 3, no longer in Lower Sec anymore.

            And

don't worry about your son having missed out past 2 years of (2019 Sec 1 and 2020 Sec 2) O-level MOE curriculum, because since he from IP, not difficult to catch up what he had missed out, because once all the IP project work involvement are out of the way, he will have more time on hand to focus and manage his O-level curriculum

You need to apply individually to the school you want to transfer to. Your son might be required to sit for a school based test. Most of the transfer applications usually take place in the month of October. So I suggest you shortlist a few schools you are interested in and call those schools to get the details on their transfer process.

Yes, if vacancies arise inside O-level track,

it is possible that some schools (not all, though) may ask those keen-to-Transfer-in-students, from external schools, to take a proficiency tests in essential core subjects, like end-of-Sec 2 (English, Maths, Science, Standard Chinese), regardless of

                - whether you are an IP student, or

                - whether you are an O-level student, also seeking external Transfer, coming from another different O-level school. That means, remain within the same O-level track, only the school differ.

                in the case of SolitudeJS,
if her son were to short-list (apply concurrently) a few external schools for Transfer, it may help to (expedite) speed up the Transfer, since her son didn't accept any DSA offer. Not bound to any DSA Terms-and-condition contract, signed. He is free, in that sense.
Can also try some Secondary schools, that are affliated to Junior Colleges.

                ========================================

                But,
if is the other way round of Transfer instead, ie. Transfer from (O-level into IP) track,
                ah,
this type of Transfer will require end-of-Sec2 students to take entrance proficiency tests, unless ...
the student himself happen to come from within the same dual-track IP school himself (eg. within Catholic High or Victoria Secondary), then no need, because the Sec2 (SA2) year-end results are good enough, can tell.

                ============================================

Sec 2, is a crucial, important streaming year

at end of Sec 2, four different type of Transfer, can take place (arise)

                a) transfer, from (O-level into IP-A-level) curriculum schools

                Example

Victoria Secondary school invite Sec 2 students, to join their Sec 3 IP programme

                https://victoria.moe.edu.sg/admissions/admission-to-integrated-programme-at-year-3/

                b) transfer, from (O-level into IB) curriculum schools

                example

Sec 3 MGS (International Baccalaureate) programme, invites interested applicants, to apply

                https://docs.google.com/document/d/e/2PACX-1vT6rTJIblei8pTYxSBY3qfnLgnuMbjd2XKITgSSjg-cULHRGFrUyO4d4uEaa7xQ2ji7senUQ8SfSqLk/pub

                c) transfer, from (IP back to O-level) curriculum schools

                d) transfer, from (IP back to another type of IP) curriculum schools

                eg.
transfer, from NUS High (independent school), back to IP-A-level run curriculum schools, if the students did not accept any NUSH DSA offer, had entered by Supplementary intake (November) path instead, no strings attached, \"free\" to transfer out.
But, after having spent 2 years, find the NUS High fast-paced curriculum a struggle, hence better to exit fast in the long run

                example

transfer out from NUS High, to Temask Junior College (IP, A-level)

Can someone share abit more of Catholic High’s IP? Heard from friends that their IP isn’t as established as other schs… wonder how much of that is true…

If at PSLE, chose O level, possible to opt for HMT when not indicated in the option form? Does CHS encourage students to take HMT or only those who r officially given this option?

Cat High O level — eligibility to take HCL is determined by your eligibility letter.
So if not eligible, you will be taking CL.
If eligible, you can opt to do either HCL or CL.
So to answer that last question, it is “only those who are officially given this option”.

Cat High IP — I guess when they say not as established, it just means they are one of the “youngest” ones to run IP. But even as one of the youngest ones, it has been quite many years since it started (was it sec 1 2013?), I think first 2 batches are in the U by now.

So it’s in a way different from the likes of Maris n some others where they encourage the students to take HMT even though not officially offered in the PSLE form? It’s a no no rather than encouraged to have..

I think it is good to just follow the eligibility, HCL is much harder than CL, and for my relative who dropped HCL in sec 4, and is now doing H1 CL in JC, the feedback is JC CL is much easier than Olevel HCL. Meaning there is no good reason to struggle with HCL-O, just to be able to take 2 points off and skip CL-JC. If you have cca and affiliation, then you cant make use of the HCL 2 points also. Of course it depends on the individual and the severity of the struggle. And that is just one feedback, sample size is very small. I think if you have a child in sec sch, you can easily find out the difficulty level of o-cl and o-hcl.
