my fren replied, she said hers is 3G but she turn off 3G. no wifi signal when we are on the road but the ipad itself is sending out signal so the indocator works. she said something like the appl we use in iphone to detect our iphone when we lost it. the maps she preloaded before leaving Spore.. and it can display when we r on the road. well.. the rest i cant explain too.. but jst that ipad has this function that even my fren only realise when we drive overseas.. iphone simply cannot display without data/wif/ unless the free apps (which i haven tried) mentioned by limlim
\"Find my iPhone\" requires the data services to be on to work. The device must transmit the location to the Apple server and then it will be transmitted to the enquiring device and display the location.
For the preloading part.. need to check. Google Map on android does have this new feature to preload Maps. But not sure for latest iOS version. The older version doesn't have. Anyone with the latest iOS 4.2 or later can try it?
iPad 3G have GPS, so it is possible to show the location if there are preloaded Maps, even w/o data connection.
iPhone will work the same too, if there are ability to preloaded maps. -

The 3G version has a dedicated GPS just like the iPhone. It uses cell
towers to assist, aGPS, but also has a dedicated satellite GPS too.
GPS is only dependent on 3G for an initial fix to make it faster to
acquire the satellites. That's what assisted GPS is all about. WiFi
performs this as well. However the GPS will work without the 3G service.
The GPS works without a cellular connection, it has a dedicated GPS chip
in the device.

GPS in the iPad 3G is “A-GPS” meaning “assisted” GPS. This means that the
GPS chip gets “assistance” finding your location by first approximating
your location based on nearby wifi signals as well as nearby cellular
towers....I’ve turned off wifi as well as turned off cellular data on my
iPad 3G and it can still find and track my location
The WiFi only iPad does not have a GPS chip inside. -
like I said, issue is not GPS but map
if the map is not pre-downloaded, there is no map to display when there is no data connection. -

All these have been mentioned in our earlier posts right?
But it does not solve the mystery nor explain why iPhone doesn't work for your case.
As mentioned earlier, the 3G version, as well as iPhone, CAN locate your coordinates using GPS. But Google Map will NOT work if there is no data connection. How did your friend get Google Map to work, that is the mystery.
Can share how your friend preload the Maps? Thanks..

check this out, if this make sense :
This also will work on your Google-maps enabled, broadband-less phone.
Unlike the program on a computer, however, the phone application will keep
informing you that you've lost the Internet connection. Just keep closing
the dialogue box without closing the application.\"

hi, care to share what are the useful apps you use for streaming/watching movies/dramas... as well as storing your child's notes? Do u convert docs to pdf so it can be read, or is there something more effective??I have iPad 1 and iPad 2. I find these iPads are very useful, if you know how to make full use of it, beside playing games, stream or watch dramas/movies, you will find it an angels.... and a good tools for the kids.
My boys hate my iPads, I tell you why. Beside using it as an entertainment gadget, I have turn those iPads into their revision tools. I saved all the study notes, test papers, some model composition for them to read on the move.
I find it so easy, becos I do not need to bring piles of books or assessment when we go out. I just have to turn on the iPad, the material all there. Ha Ha! Once they have done their revision, then iPad will be there to entertain them... One stone kills two birds...
:thankyou: -

If you have iPad2, just take the picture is most easy and fast way to keep notes, esp if you just wanna read it on a short trip.
