What is your preferred free Anti-Virus?
-
What is your personal experience with free anti-virus? Which one do you use? Are they good enough? Or do you think free is not good enough and need to get a paid version?
-
Personal experience, free one is as good as useless.
Tried Norton, Trend Mirco and Bitdefender, but didn’t like them, some too strict, some user-unfriendly.
Recently installed PAID AVG and am very pleased with it. 2 years, 3 PCs, from Challenger. -
DH uses Norton for the home PC ....
Personal experience, hmmmm, okie, chk with him and let you know later .... -

Got infected despite having the free AV installed? Which one were you using?Personal experience, free one is as good as useless.
Paid AVG should be the same as free AVG but with added features right? -
BigDevil:
Yes, can't remember when or what, but yes, whole system crashed, computer needed hospitalisation and caused me a big hole in the pocket.

We use paid anti-virus software from Norman. Can't remember exactly how much I paid but it was less than $100 for 3 users. So far quite happy with them.
This is the one we got:

I have tried alot of them, and believe me, norton is the best.
The protection seems alright, (anyway, most of us don’t know a thing) but the speed is top notch and easy to control.
just an anti virus is not enough, so best is to get a suite with Firewall etc. There are free options, but they just slows my PC -
Personally, I find Norton rather disturbing and memory-consuming. I’ve actually uninstalled pre-loaded Norton and AVG. It’s less disturbing but it conflicts with other firewall programs like Zonealarm.
I used to like Zonealarm until I tried its full suite. I strongly recommend Zonealarm users to stop at its free firewall function.
Right now, I’m running AVG downloaded free from cnet and occasionally runs spyware and virus checks using HouseCall from trendmicro.
So, I’m not paying a cent for great PC health.
