7 New IP schools
-
Tks a lot jtoh!
jtoh:
For Banding of schools, search the MOE website.
Here's the one for 2009:
http://www.moe.gov.sg/media/press/files/2009/09/moa-2009-annex-e1.pdf
As you can clearly see, SCGS is in Band 1 and for many years. -
dunnoleh:
Even if you are in one Ip school, you can still transfer to another IP during sec 3 or 4 or J1.
why go to one of the new IP schools?hardworking:
My friend’s son scored 25+ and couldn’t get a place at HCI. He went to his second choice which is a ‘band 1’ school. He scored 7A1s for O levels and went to RI (JC). If now, he would have gotten into one of the new IP schools and missed his opportunity of studying at RI. It is messy.
he can still do exactly the same thing now; go to a band 1 school > score 7A1s > RJC.

Thanks so much Tanbh!

These new IP schools have a few independent schools and their students typically do not qualify for the MOE scholarship accordingly to psle score. By approving these expensive independent schools but not other \"cheaper\" government schools but of comparable academic standard, wouldn't the government be perceived of benefiting the richer elites more?
don't think so
government schools have been lacking in certain areas of school management ability (except for RI / RGS which are independently managed byt gov't funded). i dare not mention other names here. if you are free, go browse those threads on Sec 1 DSA for certain government schools and compare with those government-aided schools ....and you will see the difference based on parents discussions
hence to approve who for IP application must certainly look into whether the schools are ready in terms of ability to manage, and whether they have the resources to manage.
if you compare St Nick / MGS with say SMSS or BPGH...there is still a big gap. Having ambition to become an IP is one big step of faith on the part of the principal to begin with -

how many can have 7A1s reduced to 3 points for L1R5 in order to enter RI J1 ?

That only shows three points which one of them must be correctWeiHan:

1. The government has send lesser quality management staffs to government schools.
2. MOE centralised managment of our education system has room for improvement.
3. MOE did not provide government schools with equivalent resource which like first point that our government is elitist.
Moreover, you miss my point. Certain schools being better managed than government schools didn't disqualify my point that it benefits richer people more. -
Sorry for jumping in here. Have been reading the posts :-). It is not that MOE has not invested the resources in govt schools. Some schools with long history have strong support from their alumni. Popular schools attract students from better family backgrounds and the parents are very supportive of the schools. Influential alumni and parents help to lobby for what they want :-). This is something that most govt schools are lacking in. Being a principal of a popular school is not easy. Have to manage the expectations of all the stakeholders.
Strange that still no news online…waiting for the evening news now… -
WeiHan:
government aided schools are helped very much by their board of governors / directors / alumni and management committee (some are descendants of the school founders)....purely government schools do not have such - you are just not born with it.

I don't disqualify your point.
RI / RGS / RGPS being government schools also benefit many many and a lot of rich people wat ....on the other hand, poor people also can go to those government-aided schools wat and benefit from their system, who is stopping you ? remember, at Sec school, the posting is not distance based any more - it is ability based - based on the national placement exam called PSLE -

Just wondering if they are ready to implement it so soon. Else by then the current Sec 1 & 2 have turn sec 3 & 4 to prepare for 'O' level liao.
Every sch has its own merits. We should cheer for 7 new IP schs, giving our next batch of P6 more choices. Hopefully the current Sec 1 and 2s can benefit too.
