Saw some other forum talking about 3G ABACUS, any difference from mental abacus?
What’s the course fees of CMA for abacus?
Will the child be confused if send to class when reach 3 yrs old? Saw so many types of beads thingy for abacus, what type will be use for class, or does the class provide? -

-1st generation is the China type, 2 beads on top, 5 beads below.
-2nd generation is invented by the Japanese, modified from the chinese abacus call the soroban, 1 bead above, 4 beads below.
-3rd generation is invented by a Singaporean lady (Mdm Chee) in 2005, 9 beads on top, 1 bead below (http://www.3gabacus.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=12&Itemid=26).
If you ask me, of course I will tell you the 2nd generation (which is my rice bowl) is better.
CMA abacus uses 2 hands vs 3G uses 1 hand. Using 2 hands trains the child left and right hand coordination (motor skill) and help stimulate both side if the brain.
The soroban is smaller, easier to visualise and thus faster in mental calculation. 5 beads in a column vs 10 beads in a column.
There is 2 different scheme for different CMA branches, depending on the location. -

sori.. sori.. i mean 2 different scheme for fees, depends on location. Scheme A cheaper, scheme B more ex. -

My kid had been learning 2G abacus (one hand) in CC for approx 6 months. He can add or subtract reasonably ok for a 6-year old but recently I noticed that it is not due to the abacus training ie he is not adding/subtracting per the taught abacus method. I am not sure if my expectation is correct. As a parent, how do I know that the general abacus course has been taught well and useful or ie when can I expect to see results like calculating total groceries' bills faster than me? PS: I am not keen to advance him to \"duan wei shu\" level - just good enough for daily mental tasks such as checking my grocery bills :lol:
How long do you reckon it'll take if I swop him to 2 hands abacus (in general)?

Has he finish learning all the formula? If he has not, then he may not be able to add or subtract certain numbers. As for how to know whether the class is taught well, it's a tough question. :idea:Hi abacus_trainer,

I have some students transferred from CC. The few general complaints are..
1. Class size too big, 1 teacher to 25 students, students at the back are noisy and making alot of noise, teacher unable to control the class.
2. Teacher takes no interest in helping the weaker students. The mum told me she don't even mind teaching the child herself but the teacher is impatient and can't be bothered to spend time to analyze with her what problem the child has.
3. Progress too fast, dump the child alot of new things to learn every lesson. The child can't catch up.
4. The child learn for 1 year but only learn abacus and did not learn mental calculation.
Assuming your child is already familar with the abacus and formula, it doesn't take very long to swop him to 2 hands. He just need to go through all the formula he has learned before and practice them with 2 hands. -
Just to clarify… I don’t mean all abacus classes at CC are no good. There are good teachers around. Parents need to talk to the teachers first before signing up. Understand the class size, teacher’s qualification, take a look at the books or materials, how the class is conducted, etc… etc… Although learning at CC is cheaper, it still requires your child to put in time and effort to learn. And also parent’s time fetching their kids around.

The current class size is already very small btw 5-8. In 1-2 months' time I was told that they will be progressing to multiplication/divn - so I supposed that means additions/subtractions formulae will be completed by then. Not able to comment on the materials except that they come in photostated copies (shallow eh :oops: ). No homewrork and not that I am asking for any
My kid doesn't use fingers to count (then again he never does before joining abacus) and i don't know how to assess him on his progress (& teacher kept claiming good). Well at least when I sent my kid to music class, I will know that he has progressed by using 2 hands instead of 1 hand to play even without music background. For abacus, I was hoping to see him (mental) calculating faster perhaps but doesn't seem to be the case - - maybe 6 months is too short a time? Feel free to slap me to wake me up if I am not being realistic in my expectation. -

CMA program originated from Taiwan. All the books are written by the founder. All CMA teachers need to trained and certified by CMA. There is quality control in CMA abacus classes. For CC abacus classes, teacher's experience and material used varies.Hi abacus_trainer, how is CMA program different from CC ones ?

It's not too late for P1 to start, as long as the child is interested to learn.
Branch nearest to Punggol should be Tampines or Kovan.
You will need to call up both branches to find out the opening hours and class schedule.
