CMA Math - Discussion

Hi All, you mean CMA centres has a pink book for the formulae? Its an exercise book too? My daughter has already started the formulae for + and now slowly - but so far no pink book given leh.
In addition, when can I see result coz after spending so much $ and time on her homework, she still uses her fingers to count. OMG!!! :?: -
blur mother:
It is a thick light pink colour workbook (like the others but counted as 2 books). This is the basic book which introduces all the friends / siblings / neighbours formulas thru' worksheet and the kids get to practise and move on with these basic formulas subsequently.Hi All, you mean CMA centres has a pink book for the formulae? If your kid is just doing the initial adding and subtracting of beads without learning about \"friends\" (friend of 2 is 8, friend of 7 is 3 - more like number bonding to form 10), then she is at the very basic and has progressed to the formula stage yet. Need to go thru' this formula stage before you can progress faster in addition, subtraction and subsequently multiplication and division. -

anyone can enlighten me on all the stages of cma... dd is now at \"friends\" stage. i am just wondering when i can release myself of the tiring burden of bring her to and fro from class and the homework. i am thinking of stopping after she finished multiplication and division. :?: -

Usually they will start multiplication and division at about grade 7/8/9 - depending on how old your kid is. She need to do her addition and subtraction very well before she can proceed to multiplication and division (which uses the add and subtract basics for the 2 or more digits multiply or divide). I would say it is still quite some time before your kid will reach that stage, but it is best you talk to your kid's abacus teacher to have a gauge of this if you are concerned. -
omg only stage 13 :!:
hope dd and i can tahan till the end ... and i really hope that all the time and effort put in would really help dd in due cause.

You really don't need to \"walk the whole journey\". It's up to you when you want to stop. I always say I will stop when I know DD is familiar and can use mental computation for her basic +-X/ with ease, and I do not need her to be a human calculator. Thus, not likely she will go till the stage 1-2 levels.omg only stage 13 :!:

Hi Pen88n, thanks! I saw my daughter has this pink book which need to practice with the abacus. There is also formulae example at the top left hand corner to guide you. Is that the one? Do you have the book no?
If this is the one then she is already at least half way thru the book already. -
Personally, I don’t think CMA helps with school maths. School maths is more about problem sums and knowing how to apply concepts, formulas. CMA maths is "do what you see", no need to understand what the question is asking. BUT one can use the CMA method to countercheck answers, provided one has understood the question correctly in the first place. I send my kids for CMA because it is a good form of brain workout.

Yes, me too, for brain workout. But it somehow do helps in number bondings/sensitivity.
As for time taken to complete, it really depends. Like for my case, 3 different parents signed up 1 1/2 yrs ago (Same timing), 1 week once.
1st parent - Child Pri 3 => Now going to advance
2nd parent - Child Pri 1 => Now still at foundation (still hv 1 to 2 books before going to intermediate)
3rd parent (Myself) - Child K2 => Now in intermediate (Grade 9 for mental, Grade 10 for abacus. Just learning time table)
It really all depends on the kids and time committed, normally I would let him do more than his given homework. But if u were to compare, I know some of the parents’ children here around the same timing too, the children also K2 is already grade 7 or 8, so mine still consider slow liaoz…haha.
And the last year competition, the 1st prize, only 5 years old girl had completed all the level. Their methods is 2hours a day to do the books and usually she can complete 1 or 2 books per week.
One more thing, think lower age group do more books than those olders one. -
Yes, it all depends how much time one is willing to put in at home. The more you do, the faster things will progress. And of course the older ones can progress faster as they learn faster and complete work faster.
