info ... mental arithmetic Training guide

watch how kindergarten kids - starting from 4 years old in Malaysia (our neighbour) receive training in fast mental arithmetic, using the ‘soroban’ abacus (ie. 1 bead at the top above the bar, 4 beads below):-

          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s-EKxq1oTPw&feature=related

here is a video clip on ‘Abacus introduction for kids’, illustrating how to use the abacus to teach your child:-
          http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wD5ALPHQuC0&feature=related

would you like to start training your child abacus at home, let your child learn how to use the abacus, do simple, fast addition and subtraction at home ?

if Yes, may do the following:-

1)\tbuy a simple abacus from Popular bookstore, or Big bookshop. Most Popular branches sell, costs around $6.40, beads orange in color.

i bought mine from Popular Goldhill centre branch in Newton, level 2. If not sure, can approach Stationery section staff for assistance, show you where its location.

2)\tgo NIE library (National Institute of Education), located deep inside NTU (Nanyang Technological University) campus.

you may borrow 3 books. Who is the author ? the author is: MOE abacus curriculum development teaching staff panel (our Ministry of Education, Singapore).

first book is a Teaching guide. It provides very detailed, step by step teaching instructions (including pictures inside) - how to use this book, train your young child use abacus.

the other 2 books are exercise Workbooks, for your child to practise + and -. You may also borrow abacus Wall charts, if you wish.

          a) abacus Teaching guide:-

title: Use of the abacus for addition and subtraction. Teacher’s guide.

          call number: QA113 Ust 1996
          author: Cheong, Christina Ngan Peng

          b) abacus Workbook, Part 1:-

title: Use of the abacus for addition and subtraction. Workbook, Part 1.
          call number: QA113 Usw

          c) abacus Workbook, Part 2:-

title: Use of the abacus for addition and subtraction. Workbook, Part 2.
          call number: QA113 Usw

          d) abacus Wall charts:-

title: Use of the abacus for addition and subtraction. Wall charts.call number: XWC 415

if you are a former NTU graduate/ alumni, you may join NIE library at minimum membership fees. This privilege is given only to NTU graduates, not to NUS graduates.

if you are not yet an NIE library member - once you enter the impressive, sprawling, spacious, four storey huge air-con library, may approach library counter staff.

fill up a form called the ‘Temporary readership permit’. This form is to - enable you to use the library facilities, for one day. Take the lift up to level 3. Once lift door opens, head for the open book shelf section. Look for call number ‘QA113 Ust’.

however before you go down NIE library, pls check for:-

i)\tlibrary opening hours first, appearing at top right hand corner:-
          http://libris.nie.edu.sg/

on certain days, the library is closed.

ii)\tthe loan status availability of the above 3 books mentioned – in case someone else has already borrowed them out. (in which case, no point going down).

check online libary search catalogue, for loan status:-

forgot to mention that inside level 3 and 4 of NIE library, there are at least 3 photostating machines located right at the end of the corridoor, near the ladies' / gents toilet. Bring along a cash card that is been topped up with value, in case you need to stand there and zap.

normally, at what age do kids attend CMA mental Maths ? usually around kindergarten K1 or K2. However, at CMA Marine Parade branch, there are kids who started out very young - at age 2 yrs, 11 months.

however, in the event that your child can't even sit still at a desk for at least 15 minutes barest minimum to concentrate, to focus ... means the child is not ready for mental Maths. In which case, it is better to train up yr child at home first, before start paying expensive $280 to CMA centre (10 lessons)... $28 per lesson is not cheap.

how to train child at home first ? borrow the above 3 books from NIE library, buy a simple 'soroban' abacus from Popular / Big book store, train at home first. Once your child has mastered the basics, when you then enrol him at CMA centre, because he had already learnt the foundation you taught him at home, now he can concentrate better, can focus better at CMA centre. Then your precious hard earned $ is well spent, meaningfully.

each session at CMA centre is 1.5 hrs long. What do kids learn within the 1.5 hrs duration ?

            a) 25 to 30 minutes - watch TV programme
            b) 25 minutes - abacus
            c) 20 minutes - mental Arithmetic
            d) 10 minutes - abacus again
            e) 10 minutes - game books

mental maths skill is good to acquire. Still, may not be sufficient...

P1 Maths require higher order thinking.
