Which school will your son be going? The kind of test is dependent on the school. Not every school has test.

He is in Geylang Methodist Primary..
I was also shock to know initally i thought only sap school doing that.
Want to ask if my son dont score well for the test then what will happen to him

Let me share on my son's Primary school

On 19 October i was asked to attend the Pre-Orientation for P1.
        Submission of all forms..
Entry Form,Dental form,Library form and a few more forms.
Upon submission of forms, we were asked to pay $40 for misc stuff that the kids might need in sch including diary, toothbrush, worksheets kind of stuff.
Other than we were informed that my son need to attend a test on 20Nov which is the orientation day..while parents will go to another side to listen to principal talk..
28 Dec 2010..Its call the meeting teacher session whereby my son will be direct to his classroom to meet all his classmates and the teachers..
Btw.wanna check what kind of test will they be testing my son since i ask around my friend who hv kids in other primary sch and they claim that their kids sch doesnt have that.thanks
It sounds similiar to my son school. Basically is only a readiness test. My son told me he was given a short passage to read and some sentences to answer to test their eng level.

Following after, some children has been put into the \"reading programe\" whereby the kid will join a small reading group to speed them up. I'm not sure about the actual content of the reading programe though..

Think mine just have to read a 100-words list on the first day of school (don’t know the difficulty level though). The purpose is to gauge the kids’ reading readiness.

          Orientation all in one day:

          1) kids will be led to their respective classrooms with their classmates after a school concert presentation to introduce some popular CCA.
          2) Principal will address Parent while kids are brought on a school tour. Afterwhich parents can all fill up all necessary forms (no payment required for anything).
          3) Wait for kids to finish the class activities and let them get used to the class setting. Go home.
          4) Optional : Purchase of school bags, uniform, transport arrangement at the respective booth.

            Hi Parents,

According to the schedule from the principal, the following program on 12 Nov (Fri) is:

530pm: Parent and child to reach the school. Register at canteen…submit forms for bus service (optional).

6pm: Child to go to her class (mine is daughter) with her form teacher and meet her classmates…enjoy some ‘ice breakers’. Parent to attend briefing by principal. Collect booklist.

730pm: Bye. see you on 2 Jan.

Books and uniforms will be purchased either on 24 or 26 Nov at the school.

My son in Pei Hwa didn't have any test during his orientation back then.

Orientation last Friday. Hubby brought daughter to attend. It made her miss her kindy friends even more 😢 Just hope she will make new friends soon.

Uniforms and books can be bought late Nov. I've compared prices of some books between the school vendor and Popular...not much difference and not only that, Popular doesn't have all the books. So I decided to get all from school instead.

My son went for his orientation last Sat - children were put in their classes (my guess is to make new friends) and parents went for talks/ form-filling etc.

After the 2 hr bonding time he had with his frens.... the first thing he happily told me when he's out is \"Mummy - my frens all speak English, no Chinese!!\"

Haha - My boy's chinese is soooo poor (and i kept drilling about how his frens would all speak CL and he wont understand them - CL at 1st language school so thats why i was expecting more CL) that he was SOOO happy that his fellow 'comrades' all spoke same lingo as him!! 🙂

My daughter's orientation was last Fri...she refused to tell me anything except the teachers are old :faint: I went to the school website to take a look at the teachers...other than 1 (who isn't her FT), the rest are not old as what she claimed. Well, of course compared to her kindergarten teachers, primary school teachers are older.

Don't worry about CL being first language. He will be forced to speak CL during curriculum time. My son had to speak CL a lot more (SAP school) as his teachers are strict. Anyway, with most kids coming from English speaking homes, the CL teachers will have to use English when there is a need, otherwise the kids just won't understand what they are talking about. :celebrate:
