2011 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

Now we know how those famous artistes are always misquoted by the media & misunderstood by the public.
Yes!
I know one of the local artistes on a personal level and I would say that they are seriously misquoted and that often lead to bad impressions formed by the public.
Anyway, we should continue with our discussion on the kids.
When those reporter have their own kids, they better create a nick that none of us can recognise! -

*Hugz* Thanks!mrswongtuition,
Those of us who frequent the forum all know you're here to share and not to plug your services. And we do appreciate your insights.
That's why I like KSP.

Even those who 'suan' me *ahem*v*ahem*k*ahem*s*ahem*2010* do have a logical side and agree with me sometimes. -

mrswongtuition, Jtoh is right. There are many of us who benefit from ur advice. a single comment taken out of context can be misunderstood. So keep up the good work and ignore the ignorant.*Hugz* Thanks!

Mrswongtuition, I have yet to see someone that \"plug service\" hit Kiasu GM.Wow. Even I got mentioned (in a bad way) in the article for posting comments on how parents can get organised and push their kids to study.
This is seriously terrible. Spend time to share = \"plugging my services\".
Means tutors/teachers should stop sharing in forum as it's seen as \"advertising\"?
& when I posted my sharing, my P5/6 classes were already full (hashroop knows ;)).
This is so demoralising.
Not to mention, post on everything including other real life issues.
So no worries ... we know you are diff .. just another parent like all of us :celebrate: -
mrswongtuition:
Wow  I was \"quoted\" - in the printed version, the exact wordes were put in big \"bubble\"!!! :!: Hey, there is a difference between with emoticons and without on printed version - makes me sound so \"kiasu\" when post was meant to be a \"joke\"Wow. Can I ask to be paid royalty for using my quote??? Don't they have to ask out \"permission\" to print our \"post\" and \"quote\"??? This is plagarism!!! :x -

My friend in media line is urging me to write in to scold them.
However, I think they did not quote my nick (think they did not want to do free advert for me), so it will be quite hard for me to 'kick up a fuss' with them.
Maybe you should do it since they quoted your nick! -

Already newspapers and websites are advertising on Enrichment classes, PSLE 2011 coaching classes etc and as parents of PSLE 2011 child, we are already getting panicky, seeing the (over)enthusiasm of Parents from the same league. Can Parents of ex-PSLE children suggest some ways for stress management for the entire family?

Oh!!
Someone PMed me about an interview but I rejected (I’m busy enough with my students, no time for such interviews). -
Dear All,
This is Zhou Shicai and i am a Accountancy undergraduate and also a “Full-Time” Tutor (I know i technically can’t be a full time tutor if i’m still an undergrad but the number of hours i put in tutoring probably justifies that).
I hope i can be of some assistance in clearing up some of the questions that are on peoples’ minds.
I was contacted by The New Paper on 13 October 2010 who wanted to asked me some questions regarding the Kiasu Parents Forum and also the OnSponge forum. From what i gathered after talking to the journalist (i’m not the reporter so i may be wrong), their report was kind of “ordered” by the editor after a Primary 6 kid wrote to The Newpaper last Monday regarding the stress he felt his parents were putting him under. I guess the editor felt it was news that could sell.
So as the journalist told me, one of them (There we 2 reporters assigned to this story) was supposed to do a write up about “Kiasu Parents using forums to exchange information” and the journalist who interviewed me was supposed to write about “Kiasu Kids comparing PSLE answers” or something along that lines.
I can say that my interview went amicably well. After observing the Kiasu Parents forum and the OnSponge forum (which i participated in) for a few months, i told her that both were very useful tools for parents in general who are concerned about their children’s education needs. I also helped correct some of the misconceptions that the reporter had about the forums and i gave the whole idea of the forums a “positive spin” which you can see from the quotes she took from me.
I honestly think that if i hadn’t explained some aspects of the forums to her properly (can’t blame her for not knowing after all she wasn’t in this industry), i would think the report would have been a lot more one-sided.
I feel sorry for Mrs Wong for having her online comments quoted out of context and i would think she could write to the New Paper and ask for some form of clarification or something. If i could be of further assistance to Mrs Wong, please let me know.
Thank You
Yours
Zhou Shicai

Hi Mrs Wong,Oh!!
Someone PMed me about an interview but I rejected (I'm busy enough with my students, no time for such interviews).
I am sorry to hear about the anguish you are facing regarding The NewPaper article.
When i received the PM requesting for an interview, i was confused and initially wanted to ignore it. But my friends counseled me to just call the reporter and ask what she wants. At the most, even if i am not comfortable with being quoted or have any of my online quotes being used i could specifically request that the reporter do not use my name or any of my online posts.
During the interview you could also keep your sentences short and say exactly what you want to say and nothing more. This will reduce the chances of you being misquoted or quoted out of context.
Also, after granting the interview, you can request that the reporter call you back before they submit the article and run through the quotes that they are going to use with you again and if you don't like it you can either reject or request to edit it. (I think they are just people like you and me with a job to do too so i guess if you ask nicely they will usually grant your request).
I got the above tips from my friend who used to study MassComm in NTU.
Perhaps you could use such an approach when faced with any future requests for interviews in the future.
Please do not hesitate to let me know if you require any further assistance.
Yours

A very true statement. And one that we will do well to remember!
But when faced with new situations, i would believe having someone who has some training (in that area) to advice and guide you in such matters is better than having nothing at all. -

Training provides the basics. Experience and exposure are what counts - especially in such matter. Don't pray pray.

Allow me to expand on my previous answer :
A very true statement. And one that we will do well to remember! Especially true when i was extracting teeth during my dental school days and for one memorable case, thought the x-ray showed no anomalies (e.g divergent roots etc) i was literally sweating my way through the whole procedure! Couldn't understand why the damn tooth refused to bulge! It was supposed to be a textbook case and i was using textbook procedures and yet i was screwing up big time! Which brings me to the next point.
When faced with new situations, i would believe having someone who has some training and experience (in that area) to advice and guide you in such matters is better than having nothing at all. Which in my case the prof stepped in and took out the tooth for me in less than a min. He used his years of experience to convert the clinical data into an applicable course of action that i could barely even understand!
So what we can take away from this all is though my friend studied in MassComm and you are right in saying that he probably has textbook knowledge. But my friend has also gained a wealth of experience from his professors and industrial attachments to allow me to tap into his expertise for tips on how to handle interviews with reporters : )
Perfect example no?

Yes thats right. I was a dental student in NUS previously. I studied there for 3 years. I quit when i realized that i was not suited for it in more ways than one.
Now i'm studying accountancy which i feel is very much related to my passion which is setting up and running businesses (I have set up 2 over the years).
I was always very frustrated and puzzled with the financial control part of running a business so i decided to take up accountancy which will give me a good grounding in management accounting, financial control and business law. I also love to teach so well here i am giving tuition. -
Thanks for your offer but...
1. I'm just appalled at how journalists work. Just for the sake of 'readership'. Upset - yes. Anguish - no.
2. As a teacher and tutor, we are usually not bothered by such things unless it affects our reputation. As the other parents here have posted, they understand that I'm not like what they said in the article, so no harm done.
3. Why kick up a fuss and provide them with more news? They did not mention my name or nick, so just leave it as that. Sometimes, the more you stir things up, the worse it gets. 越描越黑 - The more you try to explain, the worse it gets.
Also, what effect had the article on me?
Erm, actually, I did not even know it exists until someone posted the link here. And when I finally read it, it just feels upsetting to be misunderstood. Not to the extend of feeling 'anguish'.
So, seriously, no harm done. In fact, I got positive responses from parents who assure me that I'm doing the right thing by sharing with them. And I will continue to do so!
Psst, seriously, if you are teaching that many students to be considered a 'full time tutor', how come you have so much time for such an interview when it's exam period now? Cos I'm up to my neck with lessons and only manage to come into forum during my short little few minutes break between lessons.
