Hi. Could someone please clarify if the bands for A*/A etc remain unchanged for the PSLE? I.e. Does A* remain at 91 and above and A at 75 to 90 or does this change according to the performance of the cohort? I am of the understanding that it remains unchanged and only the T score is adjusted according to the performance of the cohort. Would appreciate any input on this. Many thanks.

There's no rocket science..as long every subject is above 90% you would get an average range of 270. Cos 90% of 300 is 270.

ahemm… it is not as simple as abv. MOE use SD to calculate T-score, and the SD varies from each subject and cohort. 270 you need to be better than 95% or more. If just score barely above.90%, there is no way can even get near to 260! Just to manage expectation…and sharing a better understanding on using SD :xedfingers:

hence, that is why some parents think that in school their kids get average about 91% but when PSLE results released, they did not get 270.. they thot that MOE / teachers made mistakes in marking his/her child's paper. They totally misunderstood it is so simple to calculate T-score! :yikes:

PSLE are only the first major exam Singapore students take. What you can achieve later in life has very little to do with PSLE.

Take me for example, I was a marginal case in PSLE (during my primary school days, there were no PSLE scores, we were told pass or fail). I made it to ACS (There was only one ACS in those days). I was placed in the middle of the cohort. (The top student went to "A" class while i was in "H" class). I failed several subjects in my first semester (oops!!). Subsequently, I have done reasonably well.

PSLE - no score but middle of the cohort.
O levels - 10 points (above average in those days)
A levels - 4 As (I was offered scholarships but rejected all of them)
NUS - top engineering student and gold medalist

Bottom line, with the correct motivation, a late bloomer can do well academically. Hence, if you done badly in PSLE, it is not the end of the world. Similarly good PSLE results mean nothing to your future employer. PSLE is just the first road block of a long and winding road.

PSLE is nothing once child goes to secondary school.

BUT, it is the first major exam at the end of 6 arduous years of primary school…and much emphasis is placed on it.

It’s my duty as a parent to see that my child has been sufficiently prepared for it…when I see that he has done his best, that is an accomplishment.

After my son was done with his last paper 2 weeks ago (seems like eternity), my daughter’s P2 SA2 doesn’t seem that important. Don’t know if I’m being fair to say this…but I just do not have the energy nor the mood to push her.

When he moves on to secondary school, I hope to focus my attention on younger one…But with 8-9 subjects, I think I may still need to guide him in the beginning. It’s a whole new world of freedom but still gotta hold the reins as he approaches teenage life and raging hormones.

Experienced parents who may have gone through this, perhaps you can advise me how to handle. Thanks.

Precisely how I felt last year. For the 1st half of this yr, I felt my lower primary girl's exams were not very important. Only after June, I have started paying attention to her. My older girl in Sec 1 is busy with her homework and projects and I see her studying only before the tests. I no longer guide her in her studies and I like it that way.

                        Hi ks2011,

                        Thanks for your assurance.

PSLE is nothing after kids move to secondary school…yet it is that moment of truth while riding that roller coaster. So when we have to coach younger kids after PSLE is over, that P2 SA2 seemed unimportant.

When my older one goes to Sec 1 next year, I am not able to be in control.
But still have hold my ‘mummy’ triumph card where discipline is concerned.
So I can let go and shift focus to the younger one next year. I feel a sense of relief reading your post. Thanks.
