      Sorry…!

      1st pattern - 1 dot
      2nd pattern - top layer 1 dot, bottom layer 3 dots
      3rd pattern - top layer 1 dot, middle layer 3 dots, last layer 5 dots
      4th pattern - top layer 1 dot, 2nd layer 3 dots, 3rd later 5 dots, last layer 7 dots
      Question : How many dots would there be at the bottom layer if there were 999 layers?

        Hi

        bottom layer = the nth odd number = 2n-1
        eg. 3 layers -> 3rd pattern -> 2 x 3 -1 = 5 dots at bottom layer
        so, 999 layers -> 999th pattern -> 2 x999 -1 = 1997 dots at bottom layer

        cheers.

                    Another question:

                    A group of people took part in a survey. 1/4 of them were men. 5/12 of them were women and the remaining 68 people were children.

                    a. How many people took part in a survey?
                    b. Express the number of children as a fraction of the number of women.
