      buds:
Bro... isn't that supposed to be 4fives? :?

5 fours; should be 5 (times) of the number four.
Or like SAHM Chew said... 5 groups of four.

DD2 used to always get this mixed up.
Kinda a waste of 2-marks questions i say.
Yes sista, that was 4 fives...but that's the answer in the answer key to the 5 fours question.

That's why I work out the answers myself when I check DD's work.

        Help!

I am using EPH P3 Challenging Maths (Sundya Sandhar) for my P3 son. Here, in England, he is in top set for maths but struggles on maths problems. He never reads the whole problems, never breaks down the steps nor lists the key info. He therefore does not complete the problem, step-by-step - and is therefore unsuccessful.

How about if I take him through the Section A questions, teach him the foundations and get him to apply the concepts in the Section B and C questions.
did he try the easy problem sums in other books?
Challenging Maths (Sundya Sandhar) is a challenging indeed.

Can score full marks for problem sums and all other higher order / challenging type questions but the carelessness from easy peasy questions, either from complacency when skimming thru easier questions (take for granted/over-confident/not internalizing properly) of what's \"really being asked for in the questions\" or from transference errors in her workings for eg. 427 + 274 = can be reflected as 247 + 274 =... (especially those sums with repeated numbers in the questions) :pokeeye: or the worst kind of mistake that can ever be made... :nailbite: ... the \"cannot read own working due to illegible handwriting\"... ie. she reads her 247 as 297. :faint: ...
You are talking about my DD??

I have another one.... when lining up the numbers to do addition or subtraction, the tens-place digit in the second number will end up under the hundreds-place digit of the first number. So end up adding/subtracting the wrong number. :frustrated:

Same here. Esp. those in blue. I am still nagging on it. Sigh.

:offtopic: Recently we found out that she had myopia (-2.5 right eye and +0.5 left eye). Hopefully with the spectacles, she can do better(?). Spectacles - another worry as she is going to wear the spectacles for the first time. Another big sigh.

My son(P4) used to do calculation in his mind, yesterday he wrote in the exercise book and said after few calculation in his mind, his mind would be tired.so better to write in the book.I think it helped him in the CA1 this year.Last year every exam I encountered different careless mistakes.
In P2, first qn asking more then add
next qn asking less also add
addition -- first column add, then second column minus instead of
            add
            tranferring mistakes cos illegible hw

In P3 copy the numbers from qns wrongly
the qns asked how many pupils there?
he found out number of boys from the bar graph then gave the answer.number of girls given.
multiplication first column multiply second column add
            In P4 didn't put unit
didn't put \"-\" in the number words. this one I also don't know.
            twenty-five thousand ........
            multiply wrongly
            this time no tranferring error.
I always highlightened where he got wrong.Asked him to do slowly.Read the qns carefully, copy the numbers carefully and give the answer for qn.
I asked him to do back to front(I read in KSP how to reduce careless mistakes thread).cos after section A and B his mind tired and he can't concentrate section C.This time he matured a bit and know he has enough time.previously he can't accept or feared not enough time and do faster and got many careless mistakes.Just want to share,if useful i am happy.Last year I lost my hope.

DD does that as well. Better still she can start out adding but end up subtracting or vice versa.

I lay off the  n just go back to concepts. I asked her your 5fours question yesterday just to be err sure (testing nia la) and before I gave the choice answers from the given, she oredi gave me the right answer. Phew! But she gave me the look.. :skeptical: Why u asking me this? Testing me issit, mom? I got that oredi lar.. dun worry.

                    😂

For her now is the MD. 😓 Thankfully, her teacher is anal n super onz when comes to MD so she sees the need to buck up. 😉 I can relate as to how MD helps pictorially but I still dun like it. :politebleah:

wow, so I am not the only one facing these kinda probs...
                    Thanks buds for sharing.

                      Thank you smartmummy

At the heart of the matter is that he does not read, nor read to understand. Therefore, I thought if I go through the Section A questions with him, and show him the steps to follow, he can then apply these concepts to the higher-order questions in Sections B. and C. I also want him to try the Terry Chew MO books, but it is his reading that is letting him down.

Any thoughts, smartmummy and other posters - based on your experiences?
