      Can you explain using models? I understood your explanation but I try to refrain using algebra to teach my kiddo.

      Thanks a lot. 😂

            May I know how to explain to kid?

            Mrs Chua bakes some tarts to distribute to her neighbours
            When she gives each of them 4 tarts, she will have 6 extra tarts.
            When she gives each of them 6 tarts, she will need to bake another 4 tarts more. How many neighbours does she have?

            Alan, Benny and Calvin have 120 stamps altogether. Alan has 5 stamps more than Benny. Benny has twice as many stamps as Calvin.
            How many stamps does Calvin have/

            Thank you 😄

              Hi

              The common method used in P3 maths is Systematic Listing (SL).

              Please use this slide (P5 question) as an example), the approach is the same.

              A quicker way is to use the concept of “Excess and Shortage” .

              In the first scenario, the excess is 6 tarts.

              In the second scenario, there is a shortage of 4 tarts.

              In order to give each of her neighbours two more tarts, Mrs. Chua needs to bake 10(6+4)) more tarts.

              Difference in number of tarts given to each neighbor ------ 6 - 4 ------ 2

              Number of neighbours ------- (6+4)/2 ------- 5

              Best wishes

                  Hi

                  Just curious

                  MCQ or OE?

                  Draw one box to show Calvin.

                  Draw two boxes to show Benny.

                  Draw two boxes + 5 to show Alan.

                  5 boxes + 5 ----- 120

                  5 boxes ----- 115

                  1 box ----- 23

                  Calvin ----- 23 stamps

                  Best wishes

                      Hello, another way of understanding this sum is as follows pls.

                      2 extra erasers --> 53-5 = Need 48 more erasers.
                      1 extra eraser --> 48/2 = Need 24 more
                      (a) 24 more = 24 students in the class (Each student gets 1 more.)
                      (b) At first --> (24*7)+53 = 221 erasers

                      I am a parent of a P3 kid and am tutoring him myself. This thread has been a great help. Heartfelt thanks to all the experts indeed, esp. tianzhu's models and explanation!

                        Hi All,

                        Pls help to advise about the best method to solve the below type of questions (any model we can teach to children):
                        1) The product of 2 facing page numbers is 132. What are the 2 page numbers?
                        2) Mrs Choy bought 20 forks and spoons for $48. Each fork cost $2. Each spoon cost $3, how many forks did she buy?
