I would think the $50 is registration for RI DSA regardless of whether one needs to sit for GAT.
I agree with sandunes. By collecting $50, I believe all applicants will be going thru at least one of the test, depending on the criteria. For GE students > 80%, they'll go for interview. For GE students < 80% & others who applied thru other domain, they'll sit for GAT.
As to whether there's shortlisting after GAT, then I'm not sure. I've been wondering, especially for sports & music talent, what if they do not pass GAT test but they're really talented? Isn't this unfair to them if they're not selected for the audition/trial? -

I look at the $50 as an admin fee for processing your application, from sorting through your online application to administrating GAT and written tests, trials, auditions and interviews. So GEP students lose out because they pay $50 for just an interview? :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:sandunes:

As for sports and music talent, I know in some schools they go for their trials/auditions first and then on to GAT after. So essentially they do both. I don't think schools would dismiss a child from trials/auditions because they didn't do well in GAT. BUT, there are cases where after going through GAT and trials, a child is not given CO because his GAT wasn't strong enough. Which is fair enough bec if under-performance in GAT could indicate that the child may not be suited for the academic rigour of the school. -

[/quote]HCI is more pa-tu (fair), they charge accordingly the test items mah. GEP only need to take one test + interview while mainstreamers got more papers for them to mark mah... and if you have no chance at all, they tell you save up your $50 and online application and rejection letter admin is free.
