Uke:
My DS applied DSA via Chinese Orchestra. Managed to get his Piano Grade 5 (Merit) this Feb. Knew too late about CO instrument grading exam. But seriously don't see how he can squeeze in any more time for individual lessons. Hope his piano Grade5 can count favorably.

      Hi Uke,

Has your ds gone for his interview etc... already???

How is the interview process like for asthethics? I suppose it's an audition + interview? Can you share what to expect?

Well said. As a parent of a GEP boy, another challenge that I have learnt to manage is “failure”. It was a triple blow to my DS when he was rejected by the 3 schools that he had applied for DSA, while most of his classmate has gotten at least 1 to 3 DSA CO. I guess it was the parent has to be blame as we had set the expectation too high. My DS scored 76% for his SA1, silver for SMOPS and school team of a popular sport that has won several zone and national awards. The whole family nearly gone into depression. Luckily, DS able to pull himself up and done well enough in PSLE to go to his current IP school and is doing well now.

In summary, to me it is not easy to be a GEP student, it is more challenging to be GEP parents

Good morning GoodDad, just wonder if your ds's DSA domain would have been better via sport instead? Did you check with them at that time?

My DS was from GEP, so it was better to apply DSA via the GEP domain. The 3 schools that DS applied for DSA were very competitive in sport also. According to the 3 schools, once my DS were accpected by the scool via DSA sport, he is not allow to take up any other CCA and has to stick to the same CCA for 6 years.

I thought it is compulsory. Any other achievements will be considered bonus. No?
I have been following this thread on dsa in preparation for next year  Boy, was I stressed out after reading all the posts. :yikes:

Sure is worried whether my ds will be able to make it to dsa :frustrated:

I also followed this thread for about a year before my daughter applied for DSA last year. Even though she didn't get an offer, we treated it as a good experience for her, and she found the tests she did interesting because they were so different from PSLE stuff. Regarding DSA this way relieves the stress. After all, DSA is not a qualification or entry hurdle in itself; it doesn't mean that 'failing' DSA means that your child cannot continue into sec school, or even into his choice of sec school. My daughter did get into her first choice after PSLE even though she wasn't offered a place through DSA. Even if she hadn't got into that school, we told her that her that her other choices of schools were not 'bad' schools by any means and that her education is primarily what she herself makes of it, and not entirely dependent on the school she is in. So there's no need to be stressed, and don't pass it onto your child.

Well said. It is our turn this year and we try to downplay the whole DSA thingy for our son. We tell him to learn from the experience. We painted the scenarios for him (the worst is he does not get in but there is always PSLE to fall back on) and discussed with him the options. In the end, it was as much his decision as it is ours, to apply for DSA for the schools. Tongue in cheek - he told us that he is taking the interviews as preparation for the coming PSLE oral examination! 😄
To share my experience, it was easy to say then done. Going through the whole DSA exercise was a good experience, managing the outcome was totally another thing. Imagine 90% of my DS classmates had COs from RI and other schools. In school they were discussing what CCA to join, who will be their classmate, the parents were discussing when to purchase the RI school uniform...etc etc. My DS was one of those who did not have any CO, it was not easy for him. Maybe he was not mature enough to handle the situation.

Last year, when I was reading the forum, I know it's not easy for gepper to get thru DSA if the result < 80%. I was worried. Knowing that my DS is a child of pride, I knew he will not be able to take it if things didn't turn well. I started talking to him, managing his expectation. At one point, I even asked myself whether he has made the right choice to go into GEP. If he's not in GEP, we probably will not even considered DSA cos it might not be a norm at mainstream.
This year, finally he's going thru the process. I'm keeping my fingers crossed :xedfingers: , hoping that everything will go on smoothly. As parents, we feel stressed when we see that our child suffer (if the child doesn't know how to handle the situation). We know how much they wanted to get thru this. We can only help them by standing by them, encouraging them and hiding from them our worries. They'll have to face the outcome & learn to cope.

The pain GoodDad and his kid and all who were and are now in same issue I can understand. I am too going thru this now. My DS is < 80% (79.++) . I already told him that DSA is just one option to go in to his school of interest but I have always and will insist that it is good to be in a small pond as a big fish then being a tiny fish in big pond and being demoralized 😉 . To me I need a school with good & healthy environment , CCA/Pgm he likes. Again :nailbite: :xedfingers: :please: waiting for DSA results.

but still I prefer RI if they are strict about > 80% better inform the kids upfront of their policy and allow kids to try in other domain they are strong like mainstreamer or keep GAT then filter from that kids and then after that there should be no % involved when selecting (now it is GAT+interview for < 80% and interview for >80%)

Parents can you advise is there any GEP student <80% went to GAT but not selected for interview. I strongly believe all <80% should go for GAT+interview and there is no filtering from GAT for interview. But earlier info from KP parents that there is filtering.
