As for DSA sports students all being in the same class, this varies from school to school. Some spread them out, some (like RI) group them all in the same class. The reason being they want to work around their competition schedules and to give them more attention knowing that they sometimes have to miss classes bec of training or competitions. I don't think the schools would focus any less academically on these students though. Maybe parents whose kids have children in DSA sports can comment.

Just a correction to the above, DSA sports students in RI are not automatically grouped into the 2 sports class. If the student qualifies entry into RI by merit, he will join the normal class based on his PSLE aggregate scores. There are some boys who excel in both sports and study. These are the rare ones.

I think there are plenty of them, judging by all the championships they win year after year in so many areas of sports ..... surely they are not just from the 2 \"sports class\" of may be max 60 students ? also many of them are from among the top end of high scorers
You are right. There are top students who excel in Sports, winning Gold for RI. These are the ones who entered via their excellent PSLE scores or Academic DSA.

Thanks for update. 'By merit' - So does that mean cut off for sports boy to join normal class is S1 COP? Eg the DSA Sportsman scores 261 (2011 PSLE S1 COP) then will join normal class for 2012 Year 1? But if he scores 260, he goes sports class :yikes: ? Hmm... I thought i read that the cut off for RI DSA sports boy to be able to join normal class is lower at around 240 (see this thread page 902)? Apparently those below 240 have different textbooks - gearing more towards O level class(?) from the start 😓

There's no O level class in RI.
Yes RI has already started a 4 year programme for the sport DSA this year. Can't remember the name RI has given this programme. But if d boys did well later they will still be posted to the IP programme.

Didn't know that. So the Sports DSA boys are in a 4 year O level programme and not the IP programme by default unless they cleared a certain PSLE T-score? Did the boys who DSAd in know about this beforehand?

I was told by the center which my DS is trying to do DSA with, I was told only those DSA sport who do not hit the basic DSA sport COP will be posted to the 4yr programme. Must be told in the first place right ? Think the sch do not want to loose the sport talents just because they may missed the COP just by a mark or two.

If they're by default in an O level class they may not want to DSA into RI.

Apologies it's pg 902 of '2011 PSLE discussions and strategies' thread, not this thread. Below is one of the posts.

                Tough Cookie:
Hi. A friend's son who has been admitted to RI through a sport DSA was told this morning that he has to buy a different set of textbooks from the rest who scored above 240. Why so? Does it mean that the school is preparing these weaker students for 'O' levels?

Dec 11 ST: ‘Raffles Institution said it was looking into starting an O-level class. Principal Lim Lai Cheng said that if this happens, it will be ‘to open up options’ for those wanting to go to polytechnics or abroad.’

Well, we all know that RI does not have an O level class now. We are just wondering if the different textbooks in 2011 batch for certain DSA kids are gearing towards preparing some kids for O levels in case they cannot cope in RI.

The programme is called E W Barker Scholar Programme for those who have COP below 240. Those 240 n above will do IP route. But if they do well in sec 2 they will be transfer to IP so some boys will still go thru this DSA sport route even if they have to go for the 4 yr programme first. This programme will be v good for those real sport talents as it cater to their trainning n learning needs.
