DSA 2012

Fretting:
I think it depends which school your kid plans on applying to. For boys, places like RI, HCI, ACS, NUSH you will generally find the DSA is for the atheletes or the GEP boys, and for the GEP applicants, even then, it depends what their grades are, whether the primary school has been preparing them for DSA - i.e whether they have been attending competitions, taking on leadership roles, accumulating all the other things that will make their application look good. Blur me, when my DS applied last year, we realised so many things we hadn't done, and not sure why DS didn't know or we were not informed by pschool. So like taking part in competitions, getting at least 80% for p6 half year, having show piece project work , etc DS didn't have. We then found that his cohort of pschool, only a handful in GEP made it through DSA to some of the choice schools, compared with other schools where almost the whole GEP class got through. So its all about preparation for DSA. The whole expereince was nerve wrecking, and worse than applying for uni. Looking back, we wish we had known that we needed to prepare from as early as p4 (which is what other parents seemed to know). Then there is the disapointment of not getting into the school of choice during DSA, and accepting what is not your first
choice, because you have a CO from that school. After PSLE they are cases of boys who regret having accepted the CO they are given even if its not their ideal choice, since they could have made it to their school of choice with their PSLE results. But by then, cannot change.
Hi, may I know which GEP school is that ? -

Agree!!! :salute:[/quote]Of course! HCI & RI are equally good schools (in their own unique ways), so no need to compare them always.. Furthermore, there are many other good schools in S'pore too, besides RI & HCI..
thee are also many smart ones choosing to go HCIverykiasu2010:

If you are referring to RI as the other good school, I totally agree with you. No need to kidnap, students dream to go there.
no doubt about it
What I meant was, the boys who chose to go to the other goods schoolS, all went there on their own accord.. They were definitely not \"kidnapped\" from HCI, by the other good schoolS (plural noun hor).. -

but not surprising, during GE2011, part of King's Road - Charming Garden is zoned Tanjong Pagar (no need to vote), part of King's Road (NYPS) is Holland-Bukit Timah, and across HCI, Watten is zoned Moulmein
won't be surprised even if they zone NYPS in the east or north  -

I think they need to balance out all the schools somehow equally.Interesting!
Fairfield methodist is in south n acjc in west when they r side by side.
You will notice many interesting scenarios too, Pei Tong Primary which is in Clementi is in South 2.
Mayflower in Ang Mo Kio and Yuying in Hougang is in South 1 while some other Ang Mo Kio schools like Deyi is in North 6 while Hougang Sec is in North 1. -
Hi! Can anyone advise me? My boy is currently playing Cello in Chinese Orchestra. His school is going for SYF soon and he will be taking grade 4 exam in June. He would like to apply DSA but his results are quite average. Which secondary school can he try? What must he do to apply DSA? How is the application like? Thanks!

Quite a number of schools to apply under DSA for Chinese Orchestra. Depends if you want IP or non-IP and where you stay.
eg. Dunman High, River Vally High, Catholic High, Chung Cheng, Pasir Ris Secondary, Ngee Ann Secondary., etc. -
RI Primary Math World Contest Round Results out liao. My DS did not manage to get into top 50. He was ranked around 84th percentile. Was initially thinking to apply to RI DSA Math domain. Now, thinking whether should we just give up the idea. He is from mainstream. Heard that getting into RI via DSA Math domain for mainstream boys is practically zero. Anyone can advise? TIA.

RI Math World Contest is just one of the olympiads. There's also SMOPS and some primary school students now take SMOJ as well. And your son may also have taken the olympiad by NUSH plus AMC? He scored in the 84th percentile for the RI MO which is good. Don't give up. If he does well in SMOPS and the DSA selection test he still stands a chance.
There is at least one parent here whose mainstream kid got into RI via Math domain. Don't despair.
