DSA 2012
I totally agree that as schools took their time to decide on the children to CO/WL/REJ. DC' s should be given time to decide after PSLE when all the exam stress is over and kids will have an idea of their would be results and time to explore.
MOE's process is actually very good. The schools are supposed to notify all students of the outcome of their DSA application (CO/WL/R) by 31 August. Students and parents can then close a door on DSA and focus on PSLE. In October, after PSLE, when the kids have a fair idea of how well they think they performed, they will fill in the preference form for their DSA schools. If the kids think that they might possibly be admitted to a better school based on their PSLE score, they can choose to forego the DSA admission process and just wait for the S1 Central Posting. If they don't think they did that well, then by all means choose the school that offered you a CO/WL.jtoh:

My view is MOE should seriously review the whole process. Set a timeline that all school must release the result on tmr same day, a week to consider and submission within the date. WL be notify with the next wk and this will release the unnecessary stress for all the parents. :celebrate: the current process is not balance.
The confusion at hand came about because Victoria is asking parents to indicate whether they are accepting or rejecting the VS offers, so that VS may offer the released places to others on the WL. This is an honour system. I would think that it is not contractually binding bec the MOE preference form takes precedence. But VS is trusting that based on honour, parents and kids will select VS on the MOE form if they have so indicated in their VS letter. Note that this is a move initiated by VS, not MOE.
The current MOE system allows for schools to offer COs and WLs and the computers will allocate them accordingly when PSLE results are released. There's no need to have a separate notification date for WLs. It's just drawing out the process and confusing everyone. Imagine if the dates were extended to mid-Sep so that WLs can be compiled and parents notified. Parents will be complaining that it's so near PSLE and it's so stressful for them and their children to not know the outcome of the DSA application, that it's been dragging on for months, that it will affect the kids' mood and hence PSLE results etc.
Also, if as you say MOE dictates that everyone choose their DSA school within a week from tomorrow, it means choosing your school BEFORE having taken your PSLE. You would then not have an indication of whether you did well or badly for PSLE. Is this fair to the child?
But per princi speech in ACS I (ACS gave a form too that says (though it is not must to do like VS says) if u know that u have other offers and know that u will not accept the CO please sign the form and submit to office so that ACS I will release the seats to WL . This means based on our signed form our DC CO will be cancelled and it will not reflect in preference form any more. So Jtoh in this case MOE preference form has some impact. if VS asking parents give verbal confirmation then it is ok but if there is any hard copy to be signed then it has impact to what is reflected in preference form.
but again if VS records our phone calls and use it . OMG :scratchhead: will they do it. -

Those receiving more than 1 COs will benefit most from the current system.
I applaud the initiative by VS to request for acceptance by 24 Aug so that some of these COs can be offered to those on WLs. MOE should work with VS and improve on the system, preferably by stipulating earlier results release and centralised COs management by priority. The objective is so that your DC is not deprived of a CO simply because another DC has received more than 1 COs and not required by the system to make a choice until after PSLE.
Just my two cents worth.
But the current MOE system already does that and allows for WL to be converted to CO on PSLE results day. Basically, all schools give their lists of COs and WLs to MOE. And the computer will automatically sort out the COs and WLs to be converted based on the students' choices. No one's deprived, so long as they were deemed worthy of receiving a WL from the school to begin with. Some schools have a longer WL, like HCI, which has WL1 and WL2. So if any COs are taken up, WL1 automatically moves up to be a CO on PSLE results day. Maybe VS should consider having a longer WL too.
I can see the value in what VS is doing in asking for students to give up their COs if they have no intention of going to VS in the first place. But there's no need to revamp the MOE system to accomodate this.
Edit to add: I believe the WLs are all ranked when they go to MOE so the computer will convert WL to CO based on ranking. -

Yes, if the school's letter clearly states that the CO will be withdrawn (as in ACSI's case) then that is so. Perhaps someone who has the letter from VS can reproduce their letter here so there's a clearer understanding of what VS is asking for.

No lah, I don't think they'll do something like that without informing you. I'm sure they're very honorable.

Currently, DCs with COs or WLs have more than 2 months from now till 22-27Oct to decide on their DSA choice. Our DC can choose only one CO, why do we need 2 months to make their choice? The fact that the application process started in May wouldn’t it have given anyone ample time to make the choice by the time results were released in Aug? -

Maybe parents whose kids have more than one CO and are debating over which one to go to, or have a CO from their second choice school and are debating whether or not to take it up would appreciate the extra time to think it through and not stress over it before PSLE? Not everyone has a clear idea of which school they want to go to, based on the posts on this thread.

Had clarified with VS last week. It is not contractually binding as the MOE preference form takes precedence. Students will exercise school preference from 22-27 Oct after the PSLE.

Because there is a choice of more than 1 CO thus the need for more time? If through a centralised allocation of CO by choice of priority indicated upon application, there wouldn't be the need to choose anyway.
Imagine S1 posting released results that our DC is allocated to more than one school !?!
