Q&A - P3 Science

IJJ:
I think scientifically, ans 1 is right, but better would be either 1) ability to move from place to place 2) the need for air, food and water to grow 3)ability to reproduce 4)ability to respond to stimuli. I told my girl, for such question, go straight to the characteristics difference, cannot be wrong.
Since scientifically 1 is right and this is science subject, so it should also get 2 marks, right?.....Sigh...I really don't understand current education anymore...
I think is ans 2. or other characters of living or non-living things. such as can grow, need water, food and air, etc.S6169:

A picture showing a teddy bear and a Polar bear
Question : Write down a difference between the teddy bear and the polar bar. (Do not compare their sizes, colors and shapes)
Ans 1 - Teddy bear is a non living thing but Polar bear is a living thing
Ans 2 - Teddy bear cannot die but the polar bear can die.
Pls let me know which answer deserves a full 2 marks?
Thanks -

Hi,
I posted your question to my child and he immediately said that his teacher told the whole class not to simply write 'living/non-living thing' as the answer for such questions. They were told to state characteristics or what are their physical attributes (eg bat vs bird, both have wings).
Science is indeed tricky. -

Yup.....sigh
If I were you, I will speak to the school science teacher or even the HOD, to sort out the 'key' to this answer. Strictly speaking, the 'die' is not even along the characteristics stated. I would ask, if I do not consider the thing as 'living', then how will it 'die'? If characteristic is what they are looking for, shouldn't they go along the 4? If they can accept the 'die', why cannot they accept the 'living'? As my girl has told her Science HOD - \"If you expect specific answer, ask specific question.\"IJJ:

I absolutely agree. Both answers should be treated equally; if one is wrong, the other must be wrong too. Which is why I have much disagreement with how Primary science is being taught and tested in Primary schools. Is it science, or is it philosophy?
In any case, the first answer is \"more\" correct. The teddy bear is not a living thing, unlike the polar bear. Life and death is a dichotomy, you are either living or you are dead. The 2nd question begs the question of: what happens if the polar bear is still born, ie. it has never \"lived\"? So if it has never lived, how can it \"die\"? And if the teddy bear cannot die, does it mean it is living? -

Sometimes it has to do with the inflexibility of teachers who mark papers based on the standard answer sheet given. I would encourage students (or parents) to \"argue\" and \"fight\" for such marks. It may be 2 marks only, but if nothing is done, teachers may continue to have the inflexible mindset when it comes to marking.IJJ:

Birds fly away to look for shelter when it rains. This shows that birds
1. can move by themselves
2. respond to changes
Which is correct? I thought both are logical answers. Any comments? -
Sexyviper:
The more acceptable ans is \"2\". Cos rain is the change and birds are responding to the rain by flying away for shelter.Birds fly away to look for shelter when it rains. This shows that birds
