      Champion:

Need your advise on the above P3 question which my DD1's Science T gives as \"standard answer\". Is the answer acceptable?

      Hi

The seed coat protects the internal of a seed during the dormancy period(before germination).

A seed coat offers protection against entry of parasites, mechanical injury and against extreme high or low temperatures. The seed coat also prevents a seed from dehydrating or drying up.

At P3 level, I think the teacher’s answer is good enough. However, you may back up your answer with some of these pointers if you want to have a more complete answer.

      Best wishes

:thankyou: :thankyou: Daddy Tianzhu for the explanation; appreciates much! :celebrate:

Again, this is the standard answer given by Science T :scratchhead:
        :thankyou:
        Hi Champion

I browsed through two books in one of the more popular bookstores in the heartlands.

I'll try my best to recall what I’ve read.

Science 3 in 1 by Janet Sim ---- Buds grow into young plants.

Ultimate PSLE Science Guide/Upper Primary ---- These two books gave more details including a diagram of a cross section of an onion showing central bud and bud.

The central bud gives rise to young shoots. When these young shoots grow to into leaves , they photosynthesise to make food. The excess food is then transported back to the stem to grow new bulbs.

The buds will give rise to new bulbs.

Please don’t trust the memory of an old man too much.I suggest you take a look at these books yourself.

So, I think the teacher’s answer is pitched at a suitable level.

        Best wishes

:thankyou: :thankyou: so much for your explanation; appreciates very much! :hi5:

Yup, am trying to encourage DD1 to learn the \"keywords\" for answering OE questions and guess she is beginning to grasp it well! 😄

            http://i52.tinypic.com/11lqwxt.jpg\">

I have some doubts in answering qns.Pls help me!
Answers in red are given in past papers.

Are following answers acceptable for part (a) Z instead of Material Z?
for part (b) Material Z is more transparent?

I noticed in past paper answers, they follow what mentioned in the qn.

I have some similar doubts like can we use absorb for not waterproof (waterproof mentioned in the qn)?

            thanks in advance.

              Hi smartmummy

              Good Afternoon.

My suggestion is to “take cue” from the question.

If the question says “Material Z”, then it would a safe be to follow.
My personal opinion is even if a student were to use “Z”, it’s still acceptable because based on the context in the question Z refers to a particular material for that particular question.Of course, the best person to check is your kid’s teacher.

For part (b) in this question, we are comparing three or more objects, hence comparative words such as greatest, least, highest amount, heaviest, lightest, etc should be used to differentiate them.

Here, I suggest that you check the science syllabus. Is the term “transparent” introduced in the topic on Diversity of Materials? I recall that transparency of materials is introduced under the topic of Light and Classification of Materials for PSLE Science 2009. I am not sure about the current syllabus.

For P3 science, I think the given answer is acceptable.

Do take note that scientific terms have precise meanings. Words that we use interchangeably in our daily lives may not be appropriate anymore.

Waterproof means a material does not allow water to pass through while absorbency refers to the ability of a material to soak up liquid.

              Hope this helps.

              Best wishes

                    Hi! Plum-cake,
You may refer to this as a guide:-

http://www.moe.gov.sg/education/syllabuses/sciences/files/science-primary-2008.pdf - on page 10 there is An Overview of the Primary Science Syllabus.

But do take note that different school teaches differently - i.e. most of the school will start off with the theme \"Diversity\" in P3 but thereafter might be different.

                        Hi plum-cake,

You should get a recommended guidebook and work from there with regards to the \"depth of each topic\".
