All About Ballet
-
hi Penghu,
go back and pose the same question to both ballet teachers, at Joo Chiat cc and SBA:-
- my daughter now K1 (5 yrs old). At which age can she reach Grade 1 ballet ?
if there is a difference in the answer between the two, then you’ll know which one to choose. -
It really depends. I know some teachers in CC & SBA are sticky about the age & experience, some will require them to start from pre-primary. But nevertheless, it's best to go for a trial and let the teachers assess if the child can go for a higher grade or remain the same grade.

I always envy those who could take up ballet/ piano lessons .
That's food for thought!
Strangely, i actually said \"NO\" when my parents asked if i wanted piano lessons back then. Although I didn't think i missed out on dance and music lessons growing up, now that I'm older, I do think my life would have been different if i had lessons when i was younger. For one, my body would be much more flexible :rotflmao:
Guess many (not all) parents are living their unrealised dreams vicariously thru their kids by sending them for dance and music lessons. I'm prob one of themI have to tell myself to be careful that I don't push DD too hard and to let go if she has no interest in the end. After all, they're their own person and shld develop and discover their own interests. At least I have allowed her to explore a possible interest in music and dance.
And I guess I'm telling myself never too old to learn! Heheh... So this mummy has also started dancing! -
Haha I think age doesnt matter, probably you could do even better

I've been doing inter foundation this year. It's vocational grade where there is pointe work involved. Graded syllabus does not do pointe work at all. Some schools like SBA will deviate from the normal grades to vocational grades after grade 5, some schools will let you do both vocational and normal ones concurrently, some other schools only do the graded syllabus. I was given an option to do grade 6 as well but declined because I didn't like character work lol. Currently taking a hiatus though as I'll be doing O levels this year.Hehe I m all ears to listen!
Are you still taking ballet & which grade are you in? Any other important things that we should take note? Hehe
I guess I'm one of the very very late starters since I only started ballet in secondary school, but I guess my dance experience in primary school did help. I started with grade 2 and grade 3 which I did for one year each. Then I joined open class, so I was able to skip through grade 4 and did grade 5 last year, now in inter foundation.SAHM2KIDS:
Nope, never did jazz ballet. I heard jazz ballet is a faster form of ballet, but I'm fine with the normal classical ballet pace.Hi twilight,
Thanks for sharing. I'm very interested to know also. BTW, do you take up Jazz ballet ? -
Twilight: Wow that's very useful & interesting information that you have shared!
I have not thought of the pointe work yet hehe still a very long way more for my DD.
I m curious to know where do you take ballet lessons? What do you think of SBA, Attitude & Dance station? -
I’ve been taking lessons in CC, though this year I’ve started out with Dance Arts. To me, there’s been not much difference of class in CC as those in a proper dance school (Dance Arts in my case).
I’m not sure about those three dance studios, but there are some things I’ve heard from my friends about them. Definitely, SBA does groom a lot of good dancers, and of those performance I’ve watched, I think their dancers are indeed well trained. But of course, in the first place, they would only send those better dancers for performances. According to my friend though, she said SBA is overrated, in the sense that it’s not leagues and miles above other dance schools. Not sure how true it is, since I personally have not been to SBA. But the teachers they employ in SBA are indeed some of the best.
Not heard much about Attitude nor Dance Station, but I know that Attitude is quite a popular place for adult ballet. My dance teacher in the CC previously taught at Dance Station, and I find she’s quite good, so the quality of teachers in Dance Station shouldn’t be that bad. But Ms Rosalind Ong, the principal of Dance Station, is a very very good dancer and teacher. -
Hi twilight,
My dd is with Kavanagh Dance now at a CC, do you know if there is any comment on this school? Is it good or not? I may put her in SBA next year but the distance is putting me off. How about Sylvia McCully School at Thomson Plaza? Is it good? It’s nearer to me as compared to SBA.
TIA. -
No personal experience with Sylvia McCully, but I hear that she’s quite well known and experienced in the dance circle.
