pound egg shells then put on the ground where your plants are planted or dig a 1 inch deep small trench around the plants.. cover with plastic.. then add salt..and vinegar (if you are that generous and you want to increase the likelihood that the snails will be trapped and hopefully die)...
I am curious. Why vinegar? It seems to be the \"key\"...Chenonceau:
:? If snails eat up leaves then why you leave tiny snails alone. Shouldn't we get rid of them once and for all?
Hmmmm... I dunno about you but I have 2 types. One type with round shells. One type with sharp. The sharp ones are very tiny and tend to eat the rotted material in the soil The type with round start off small and grow big. These are destructive. I get rid of those by throwing them into a bowl of vinegar. Then, I leave to rot for about 1 week and then throw back into the soil. -

If the plants are doing fine, there is no need to open the bottle. Open only if you see any plants dying, or if the soil appears dry or if there is too much condensation within the bottle. When you see water droplets running down the insides of the bottle, there is too much condensation. If that happens, just open the bottle and let the water evaporate.
Hi Funz, I was given a terrarium recently. Am I supposed to open up the cover (the terrarium comes in a glass bottle with a glass cap). -

Nice!!
Funz,
I just read your post above, what is the difference between Thai and sweet Basil? I have been using the latter to make pesto sauce as that is the one which is always available at NTUC -

Ah....... I see! :thankyou:

One more question - terrariums are supposed to be auto-pilot right? No need watering, no need fertilizer. How come ar? How does it work?

hi imami, vinegar is an effective solvent ...and also herbicide (meaning it can also kill weeds and herbs) so dont spray directly to your herbs.. to be safe.. mix half water half vinegar and then your salt.. and for double killing power pounded egg shells even human hair!! -
Hi All,
Need some advice.
I just moved my old curry trees and now, all the leaves seem to dry up , will it grow again?
Beside basil, pandan leaves, rosemarry, what others herbs or veg are nice to grow in our current climate?
Thanks!!

Sweet basil is used more for pasta and western cooking. Thai basil is used for asian style cooking. Like vietnamese pho, or thai basil chicken/beef.

I find that the thai basil has a sharper smell compared to sweet basil. You can try substituting thai basil with sweet basil for your asian cooking but I will not recommend thai basil for pesto. -

Wonders of nature and science.
The terrarium is an enclosed/ contained environment and creates its own micro-climate within the container. Water transpires from the plant in the form or water vapour, this is trapped in the container and condenses back into water on the sides of the container and then runs back down the sides and into the soil. It is then taken up into the plant via osmosis and the cycle continues.
The same applies to old leaves, they die and decompose within the terrarium returning their nutrients back to the soil.
The only time a little water is added is when the plant has grown substantially, then a top-up may be required as the plant requires more water than the closed system currently contains. Additionally a little extra fertiliser may be required to sustain the increased growth at the nutrients within the container are also limited.

Open terrariums that I did last week. These may need more watering. Maybe once a mth and for the succulent one, maybe once every few mths.http://i1131.photobucket.com/albums/m560/cylsfun/f1145859.jpg\">
