Another club in the making?
Haha... hardly so lah. This is definitely not as hot topic as bread threadFunz:
Sure, they can. Sunflowers grow very well under strong sunlight conditions. As u have a garden, all the more shd give it a try!!Never knew that sunflower will thrive in our climate. I am waiting to redo my garden. This time I will have a herb plot. Maybe will try planting some sunflowers.

Actually, I don't have a green thumb. I'm usually all thumbs...Great sharing, Schweppes.
Getting motivated, but...
But I have a \"non- green thumb\"
As a child, the plants i planted hardly survived, while those thta my bro planted thrived. My grandma said it is becaus of my heaty body, whne i touch the plants it weakened them.
So should i venture or not ? :stupid:
Eh...not so sure abt this heaty body thingy. First time I heard of it. Maybe dont start with sunflowers first. Try the potted herb plants, like rosemary, basil, oregano. They are usually more hardy than flowering plants.
Go... go... go... :rahrah:
Try... try.... try... :rahrah:
Cheering u on :rahrah: -
twinklejoy:
Start with the hardy herb plants first. They are easier to take care and will give u confidence. Anyway, nothing to lose even if u want to try planting flowering plants. Give it a try, otherwise u wont know right?adoi...schweppes jie..after reading this thread..I'm also motivated to try again on planting pandan leaves, chilli, lime...etc
但是,我每种一盆,死一盆...
对那些无辜的盆栽很过意不去...
Any advise to improve my gardening skills?
I'm also here to cheer u on... :rahrah:
Go... go... go... :rahrah:
Try.... try.... try... :rahrah: -

Dunno where they come from but was told to use neem oil. But cos I intend to eat the chilli padi I am not comfortable using neem oil even though they say it is save so long as we don't spray the plant like 2 days b4 harvest and wash the chilli well. The other thing I did was mount some sticky traps on sticks and stuck them around the soil among my plants. I cut up those sticky lizard traps into smaller pieces and mounted them on twigs.
Funz, do you know where all these white flies came from?? it killed my lime and Bodhi planttwinklejoy:

So far only succeeded in growing pandan & lemon grass. A LOT of pandan & lemon grass. Used to have chilli padi but keep getting a lot of white flies on them. Tried planting papaya as well but everytime it grows to a certain size the monkeys will come and pick all the leaves off!

and it attracted alot of brown ants wor
My other problem was mealy bugs. Hate them.[/quote]You can protect your chillis from pest attacks by rotating fertilizers. Most ferts have high nitrogen content. This gives lush growth that is prone to pests because the cell walls of each plant cell are thin and weak. To have tougher cell walls, the plants need zinc, calcium and phosphorus as well as potassium...
I keep my edibles healthy by rotating ferts. Some calcium sulphate, some fish emulsion, some BE-1, some seaweed extract... once in a while I give diluted Super K... This gives balanced nutrition and the plants stay healthy because the pests find it hard to pierce the cell walls for sap. -
Okay... must first qualify that I don't have the green fingers and thumbs at home. In fact, I'm all thumbs
 dh and dd2 are the ones with the green fingers
According to dh my plant doctor, this is his advice:
1. Find a sunny spot in your house, garden, corridor, balcony
2. Ensure that your herb plants grow under direct and strong sunlight - herb plants thrive better under sunny conditions
3. Water the plants daily but please don't drown them by over-watering them. To prevent drowning of your plant, get one of the pots with drainage so that the excess water will drain off. Remember to throw away any excess water collected, otherwise u'll invite mozzies to grow
4. For fertilisers, go to the nursery and ask for \"Slow Release Fertiliser\". The trade name is Osmocote.
To build confidence in growing your herb garden, start off with herbs like rosemary, basil, oregano, borage and even pandan. They are quite hardy and grow quite well independently. Of course, dont forget to water them daily.
Flowering plants, whilst nice to look at, can be a challenge to grow. Dh mentioned that sometimes, after planting the seeds, you will get the plant growing but not flowering. Sometimes, our climate or soil conditions may not be right for the flowers that we are attempting to grow. That's why flowering plants are tricky. When growing flowers from seeds, must also exercise patience and they can take some time to flower. Still, no harm trying. Part of the fun in the learning and discovery process for the family.
hope that helps :celebrate: -
