Teach Less, Learn More

[quote=\"janet_lee88Kids very poor thing now...teachers don't teach much but there is pressure to excel in his class. I give him work to do everyday, but moderate when to give more/less.
Agrees on that! :celebrate: - Kids are very poor thing now
..My DD1 has been coming home with most time EL Compo & CL Compo! Very time consuming and frustrating when it takes at least 45 minutes to do each (maybe my DD1 is slow) :x. Asked her why didn't you do in class? Her answer is always the same,\" Teacher no time to let us do in the class so tells us to do it as homework!\" Yea - No time and poor girl has to find ALL the time after school to do the EL & CL Compo![/quote]
Teachers are so good at pumping kids with homework. They give compo to the kids to do, just tell them some phrases and the rest is up to kids and parents to produce.
One thing I'm pissed with - asked the HOD EL whether can compile a book of compos to give the students as reading material...she told me, 'in the midst of doing so', but will not be giving the present pupils bcos they don't want the kids to copy...what crap is that ? :x -

I think it is a great idea too! Nowadays, there are many many 'onz' parents, working or stay-at-home parents who personally research and coach kids. I even know some are professionally trained ex-teachers who are very qualified to be in these roles. They should really consider tapping into such resources.
I like!! This is a great idea!!Funx3:
Just Read Something on Class Size yesterday (Is it The New Paper, Or My Paper .... Not Sure)
There is a Rather Interesting and Ingenious Suggestion Being Put Forward by a Reader ....
It's Not Easy to Achieve 1:20 T-to-student Class ratio for the Whole Nation. Despite The Many Efforts by MOE, the Class Size Remains Almost status Quo at About 1: 40, at Best 1:30.
Root of the Problem is Lack of Sufficient T and Facilities (ClassRoom).
But it is Noted that there is a Large Pool of Well-Educated Home-Makers who R the Untapped Potential. Many of them have made their presence felt in this Web site.
Suggestion :
To Entice these Group of Qualified Home-makers into the sch Teaching System, with them working part time, say, thus improve the current T-to-Students Ratio to 2:40.
Lead by a Professionally Trained T, and the assistance of the \"HELP-er\" in class, the Kids can have more personalised attention. Like A Pseudo-Simulation of the Tutorial Class in the Poly / Uni.
Parents, What do U Think?
Yay! No need to petition lah... Collective wisdom and some gentle pressure should help things along. Aaaaah! The power of the internet.
Hopefully, they dun expect volunteering. Must pay properly. -

This pool has definitely increased in the past few years. Some may have more flexible hours as their children grow up.
Current relief teaching pool doesn't need to go through interview. For the tutors, I think interview process and content training will be good. This would mean some effort from school..... -
Hi Parents,
If schools want to tap on parents to help teach students, then they better ask MOE to pay. Itβs not fair to expect FREE as in PVβ¦anyway, PVs wonβt know how to teach right ? -

We R ALL Past the Stage of PV.
Afterall, Our Kids R in \"THE\" Pri School Already, Right?
As for Younger Siblings, Placement Will Be Offered as 1st Priority ....
So No PV required -liao!

Just in case, schools expect free service from parents.

But if this is to Be Implemented, Or Even Experimented in some Pilot Sch, MOE has to Co-ordinate the Effort.
If Implemented Full Scale, Literally Thousands of Parents Will Be Involved ....

Good suggestion! If there's such a scheme, I'll surely sign up ( even volunteering I'm willing to do - but on a much less reduced frequency of course!) Pay cannot be so \"miserly\", but also not expecting an excessive amt...
Thought now our current sch system has this position called the Teacher's Aide ? I was int. in the job before, but if not wrong, the pay totally puts me off then!

What's the Job Scope? Think it's NOT Teaching Related.
Just A Nice Name for Someone to Take Over the Admin Part in Class, Like Collecting $$$$ for Donation Cards, Enrichment Class, Compiling Name List for this and that Activity ....
Some Such Non-teaching Activity. So Can Relieve T of these Chores and T can Concentrate on Teaching ....

This is the Parliamentary Reply to qns on Teacher's Asst :
Roles & Responsibilities of Teacher Aides
1. Schools hire teacher assistants or teacher-aides to increase their capacity and supports teachers in their tasks. The teacher-aides may be deployed to relieve teachers of administrative and non-professional duties. They can also help teachers in classroom management, so that the teachers can focus on teaching or adopt more student-centred strategies.
2. While teacher-aides are deployed to support teachers, teachers remain responsible for the planning and delivery of lessons and school activities. Unlike relief teachers, the teacher-aide cannot stand-in for teachers in the conduct of teaching and instructional duties.
Employment of Teacher Aides
3. As the circumstances and needs of schools differ, we have given schools the autonomy to engage relief teachers or support services such as teacher-aides. These services can be paid from the manpower grant that the Ministry allocates to each school. This year, we increased the manpower grant to allow schools greater flexibility and capacity to support our teachers. We understand that to date, around 60 schools have engaged teacher-aides.

Think you're right, FUNX, teacher's asst is more to do with the non-teaching aspects of the job. So, your suggestion is a totally new job scope.
Wonder which KS forumner's MP is the Edn Minister, Dr Ng Eng Hen ? Maybe they can pay him a visit in his Meet the People's sessions, esp so when this yr is Election year!

How \"miserly\"? Think less than $1000, if my memory doesn't fail me...
