hello allβ¦
i intend to send my boy next year when he turn 18months.
will he be too young?
can anyone pm me the price range?
im living in yishun⦠which is the nearest zoophonics i can go to? -
My 2 kids started zoophonics around 18mths too, but just only weekend 1hr class. They moved to daily class only when they reach the age for N1 level. In the enrichment 1 hr class, it's basically learn through play, and actual phonics last probably 10mins.
Tampines should be the nearest branch ba?dolliepollie:

By the way, do you know if the Zoophonics and I Can Read are the same. I also see that they don't focus much on Chinese. Any comment on that?
TIA and have a nice day

My boy was with Zoophonics (Tampines Mart) for once a week enrichment.
I took him out after 1 term.
Main issues:
1. Teacher is a middle age lady who can't speak proper English. Her pronunciation was not clear and my boy also picked up the poor pronunciation for certain new words which were taught during the lesson. (Until today, he still pronounces the word 'nurse' wrongly as taught during his lessons in Zoophonics. We tried correcting him but he insists that the teacher was right.)
2. The teachers could not manage the class.
3. When given feedback (before we decided to withdraw him), no action taken and no effort to explain.
4. They took very very very long to refund my deposit although I gave them more than 1 month's notice. (I paid for a while term, so when we told them we wanted to withdraw him, they told us that they will pass us the cheque for the refund of the deposit on the last lesson with them. However, it did not happen and we had to keep calling in and emailing them. When I call in, it was hard to get hold of anyone - and they supervisor of the centre kept persuading me to let my boy join back. Finally, the sent us the refund after I called their HQ to complain. That was 3 month after his last lesson!)
Things we liked about the class:
1. My boy likes the songs.
2. The thematic approach is fun for my boy.
Anyway, we let my boy join the class for fun (more for social interaction). Before he joined the class, he already knew all this basic phonic sounds but the teacher insist that they cannot let him join the older children though he is independant (can attend class without us accompanying him) and his standard is faster than the older kids.
For the price you are paying, I think there are better options elsewhere. I'm glad to take my boy out and he's having lessons elsewhere now - with very fast improvements.
I totally agree. Teachers are dubiously 'qualified' with the command of English spoken. I really hate this school. Don't send your kids there and end up disappointed and waste money. Be warned when they keep asking for deposit advance payment. (I am not the only) and all this money unable to be taken back like my case and others.
I highly DO NOT recommend Zoophonics.

Really
My boi is in teacher Janice's class.
I do not have any idea about \"I can Read\". Heard good and not-so-good feedback. Both teaches phonics as their strength, probably just adopting a different methology. IMHO, I think Chinese is not the core competency of both zoophonics and \"I can Read\". Chinese is provided in Zoophonics to give the kids a more holistic learning environment. Schools like \"Tian Xia\" is specialise in chinese learning.Sotong_mum:

To be fair, if it is just one teacher that do not make the mark, it is not necessary to condemn the entire school. Zoophonics, like other schools, has it's own methodology. The school depends on the teachers' delivery of the method and I have seen some good teachers in Zoophonics as well. Probably the school should have made a more stringent selection of teachers.
The methodology by itself is sound and proven (at least for me).
Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with Zoophonics, just a happy parent whose kids are learning and progressing well with the schools
