Parents the price for the titles have been reduced, for those thinking about it, now good price. I heartpain looking at the discounted price compared to last year :lol:


Now you can buy by set or as individual title but individual title cheaper (when add up all 7 titles)if they are available. I also dunno why individual title cheaper than set. Thot they would want to encourage pple buying the whole set

What I didn't understand was the historical part. It says there is historical meaning to the words \"short\" and \"shoot\" pronounced the opposite way? I was very intrigued. And the other eg too. I can visualise the Chinese character in my head but have no idea the story behind it.

There is actually a cute story involving Confucius and Buddha about the words 射 and 矮 :

被误传了五千年的四个汉字
有一次孔子找如来佛商讨儒学。如来自夸认识天下所有汉字。孔子同他打赌，输了就输一个“啵啵”（即用手指在额上弹一下）。

孔子就写了这个“射”字。如来说：这是射箭的射字。孔子说：不对。这念“矮”字。一寸的身子当然是矮喽。如来被搞懵了，问，那“矮”字呢？念什么？孔子答道，“矮”字读“射”字。又解释说：矮字一边为矢，矢也，箭者：一边为委，委者，弯也，意即弯弓射箭，当然是“射”字！如来无法反驳，只得认输。

于是孔子就在如来的额上弹了一个“啵啵”，所以世上的如来塑像上，额头都有一个红红的鼓鼓的小包。

如来气不过，也想出两个字来考孔子。这次轮到孔子答不上来了，于是如来非常得意地伸出手，中指扣在拇指上，笑眯眯地正欲向孔老夫子的额上弹去，孔子见势不妙，一转身溜了。——我们在大雄宝殿上所见的如来宝像，不正是那个生动的姿态吗？
如来要考孔子的那个汉字，就是“重”字。
“重”为千里组成，千里之外谓之“出”。

而“出”字，为两座山相叠，两山相叠，还不为重吗？
谁也无法解释这几个字为何弄反了弄错了的千古之谜。
这样的汉字之趣还有好多，你不妨去找找。
也许这是今人的附会，也许还是今人的幽默哩。


Actually, the real reason is as follows. Basically the following section explains how the words evolved from their earliest pictorial forms :

实际上并不是这么简单：
有人说有些汉字是造错了，最著名的例子是“寸身”应该是“矮”，“委矢
”才是“射”，又如“两山重叠”应是“重”，“千里”才是“出”，等等。这
些说法我们经常会在报刊上看到。那么，这些字真地造错了吗？

“射”：这是个象形字，在甲骨文、金文中，是拉弓上矢的象形，原本的写
法应该是左弓右矢，由于“弓”“身”形状相似，到了篆书，已误写成左身右矢
。在篆书中“矢”“寸”近似，变成楷书时，又误成左身右寸。可见这是汉字演
变中的伪变，与造字无关，更与“寸身”的会意无关。

“矮”：这是个形声字，从矢，委声（矮的古音为“委”）。为什么从矢呢
？因为矮者，短人也，“短”从矢，“矮”也跟着从矢。为什么“短”字从矢？
原来在远古时代，矢（箭）是量长短的工具。

“出”：这是象形字，与“山”无关，在甲骨文、金文、篆文中是两株草重
叠的象形，表示“长出”，也有的认为跟“步”类似，是一前一后两个脚步，表
示走出、前进之意。

“重”：这是形声字，从壬，东声（“重”的下半部实际上是“东”）。为
什么从壬？因为“重”的最初含义是厚，“壬”是人在土上，表示厚。

之所以会误以为某些汉字是造错了字，无非是不熟悉汉字字形的演变，需知
楷书并非汉字的原始形式，从甲骨文、金文演变到楷书，字形已发生极大的变化
，要研究汉字造字，显然不能以楷书为凭；或者是不懂或混淆了六书，把象形字
当成会意字（如“出”“射”），或把形声字当成会意字（如“重”“矮”）。

Cute story about the Buddha, the first time I read it, too tired couldn't understand. Reading it again with a clearer mind, finally got the story. Will have a long learning journey with the kids :lol:

I remember someone telling me this story when I was a child, I think I am a lot older than you Later as people become more English educated, this story was not told anymore in Singapore.
