My boy is 4 yrs old now. He is with the speech therapist for 2 yrs already. Improvement is not immediate. We see vast improvement after we put him in childcare where there is more interaction with other children. He is assessed to be 4 mths lower than his peers now after 2 yrs of ST. Parents have to play a part too. Practise what the therapist teach.

Did ur therapist did any intial assessment on him?

4 months behind is quite minor, I think. I am sure your son will catch up very quickly.

My son is not very cooperative during speech therapy classes - hopefully he will improve. Probably because of the lack of cooperation, the therapist is not able to do much of an assessment on him for now.
What was your son like at about 2 and a half years old? My son is still at single syllable. There is a slow but steady increase in his number of words, which is encouraging. But all still single syllable.

My son also uses single syllable when he is 2 yrs plus. Childcare teachers commented that he has strong vocabularly & they are surprised by the amount of words he know. I think he just do not know how to use them to form sentence & communicate.

              Hi Sheryl,

Your son must be able to make sentences now since he is only 4 months behind. That's really great! Agree with you that parental involvement is very important.

Can you share with me how you encourage your son to move from single to multi syllables? Thanks. šŸ˜„

                Musings:
Hi does anyone have experience getting exemption from mother tongue for child with delayed speech? My DS in nursery has delayed speech and seeing speech therapist at KKH every month.

Is the exemption apply throughout primary school or depends on actual progress?

Any info on exemption from Mother tongue will be appreciated.
My son is diagnosed with Specific Language Impairment (SLI), and he is in P1 now. The school mentioned that we can apply for MT exemption but we keep this option open as he still shows interest in learning the language.

                  Hi jedamum

May i know what books do you recommend. My appointment with the speech therapist is on late Dec.

                  Thanks!
                  Hi XueYen,

I came across this book in the Library and this is recommended by my son's speech therapy too.

Book Title: The Parent's Guide to Speech and Language Problems.
                  Author: Debbie Feit

I just started reading this. As I'm a slow reader, hence, I purchase a copy of the ebook from ebooks.com -> http://www.ebooks.com/321952/the-parent-146-s-guide-to-speech-and-language-problems/feit-debbie/. Not sure if you can get this in local bookshops.

                  Regards

                    SAHM Chew:
Ds3 was doing speech therapy at nuh. Refer to epic as the doc felt that epic can help him more. My case is under nuh, can i still go to kk? Kk waiting period is at least 6 months, therefore do not felt like wasting any more time

                    mashy:

                    SAHM chew
It's odd to send him to epic if he's not autistic. Maybe u should go kkh instead. I was referred to the dr in the general clinic first, then I requested to see the speech therapist becoz of poor articulation. So I didn't go to child dev at all. Went straight to speech therapy. For u to see any significant progress, u need to practise everyday with him. ST can only see u so infreqly, the main 'therapist' is actually u. I was never referred to go EPIC Prog until he saw the child dev end of last yr. By then it's too late to attend EPIC.

                    Hi SAHM Chew,

I give up the queuing for DS as I need the frequent and immediate work with him, hence, I send him to a private Speech Therapy - http://www.leomagan.com/.

I found them through internet and DS has been with them for few months and he enjoys the lesson and see slight improvement. The cost is affordable, therapy session is around $88 per hr and normal practice session is around $40 per hr.

Talk to them and get them to assess and make the recommendation.

                    Regards

kids suspected of slower development in speech should also go for hearing check

if they don't hear well, they won't learn the speech, and in some cases, it is simply too much ear wax.  but true

Thanks... We also heard about that, so we put our son though a hearing test to ensure that his ears were alright...
