Today DS had tuition until 5pm. Then there was a stack of homework.

        1 x Math full paper
        1 x Sci full paper
        1 x Math worksheet

He didn't manage to finish one bit and I sent him to bed at 10.30pm. A record breaking time since 9.30 is the usual bed time. The really nice thing he said before going to bed was asking me to wake him up at 5.30am in the morning so he could try to get it done. It's nice to see him grow up this bit.

Of course I'm not going to wake him up. I think it's better he gets the rest. :snooze:
        Already emailed his teacher.

          Thanks Fifi,
Now I know what to do if my son encounters the same ๐Ÿ˜‰
This Wed & Thur, my son will be having oral after school till about 4. I've informed the tutor he will not be attending class on wed, as he has to prepare for CL oral.
A friend of mine told me she gave her son's teacher a note regarding excessive homework given last year (p6).

Just wondering, what will the teacher tell me if i email her and inform her that my son cannot get homework done bcos he has tuition :?

It is common for my son to do his homework till 11pm. He got lot of homework most of the days, especially for English. I think most schools are trying to push their students during this crucial year.

fifiyeo... ehhhhh... doing full papers is not waste of time leh... I always delete work that I have set if I realize that the school has given him practice full papers to do.

I have not try calling or sending email to teachers, even though he has to his homework till 11pm most of the days. I prefer my boy to learn how to manage his time properly. I have checked with his classmates and all of them clear their homework on a daily basis. By not handing up homework on time, might lead to teacherโ€™ complaints or a lot of back logs to clear.

Maybe, I do not want to give my son the wrong impression that mummy will call or email teacher if I donโ€™t do my homework. They will have more subjects & more homework when they go to Sec next year. Learning how to manage their time is important. I will not give him extra work to do due to his school workload. Just expect his to produce quality work.

If my son only does school homework, he will spend a long time doing easy work... and then he will fail his exams because his exams are way more difficult than his homework.

My children's usual bed time is 9.30pm too! They came home yesterday telling me that their P. spoke to them about time management and mentioned that 9.30pm is too early for sleeping time, 10.30pm is ok. But then, not all children stays near the school. My kids wakes up at 5.30am.
If they have too much homework and it stretches till past 9.30pm, you can see that they are working at a much slower pace (brain power slow down!). Sometimes no choice need to wake them up at 4.30am to get work done. Luckily this is not happening often, but they have to sacrifice play / reading time in order to finish hw before bedtime.
What makes me angry is that after completing the hw, it is not collected the next day. :stompfeet: Worst still, ds forgot to hand up hw and ended up with a 'late' remark written on it! :slapshead:
But I am amazed that dd's friend slept after 11pm and does her hw while watching drama on tv.

Teachers often give homework to be submitted the next day or without informing dateline. Without dateline, most students will try to finish the homework on the same day to avoid scolding. Sometimes, I found the homework not collected for days after dc spending late night to finish it. If the school wants the student to learn time management, teachers should give homework with longer dateline. How could students learn to plan or manage the time if all or most homework have to be submitted the next day?

There is also a problem of homework distribution. There are days when there is no homework but some days with lots of them especially before exams. Teachers should communicate (e.g. list the homework on the board) to avoid giving out too much homework at the same time.

For DD, she prepares 2 files herself - those homework to be handed in by tomorrow will be collected into the first file. Homework with a later dateline, she will use a pencil to do a quick note at the top of the page to indicate the date before she put it into the 2nd file. That way, she will not forget or get overwhelmed when she sees all the homework.
