I see 😄 I do think having several threads is confusing but one long thread then it is difficult to plough through (for those who came in late but I guess they got to pay their \"dues\" 😂).

Tankee - in the \"Primary 6\" there's also the Q&A and stuff for PSLE. How about either (1) remove all the PSLE from the 'secondary school selection', and use the P6 for P6 and PSLE or (2) move the P6 to the 'PSLE and secondary school selection'. Either way, just one place for P6 AND PSLE.
      Just my 2cents worth.
I would prefer to post under Primary 6 instead of this one here. What about remove this thread '2012 PSLE discussions and strategy' ? Then we all head to P6 for P6. Hope I am not confusing Tankee.

Janet, have you bought the PSLE past year (2007 to 2011)exam booklet? I think this is a \"Must\" buy especially for Science & Math. Think all school will get their PSLE students to purchase. We just bought ours. 😄

        Hi Flowermonaster,
I didnt buy PSLE past year paper (2007-2011) bcos my friend told me school will help kids get them. Did you get it from popular ? Bcos I want to have the answer key. Dont mind getting it if they are avail at popular bcos school won't give answer key. Thanks.

        Hi Tankee,
Can we continue our P6 yakking here ?

This is what helped us for the Situational Writing part of the English compo paper.

We used 2 main resources for learning about this part of the paper –
1.\tOxford Essentials series written [ I understand that it’s not readily available on the market ( although I have seen some of the books at Popular) but check this link out to make enquiries as to how to purchase if you are interested :
          http://www.learningventures.com.sg/cos/o.x?c=/wbn/pagetree&func=view&rid=4588] and
          2. Longman P6 Focus on Situational Writing by Magdalene Teo
[Caveat: I am not related to the above authors nor associated with them although I have since be-friended the author of the first resource after she helped us onto the right track]
The first was useful to explain the requirements of the section [what is tested and therefore what will be awarded marks]; concepts such as ‘voice’, “purpose’, “form” were introduced to me through this book and it made clear for me what DD needed to ensure in order to score the marks for this section. The second book was useful as it had quite detailed notes and examples with annotated explanations.
DD’s main problem was that she would be writing the required text without a clear thought as to what she was doing ie she did not know whether the letter had to be formal, whether implicit in the text, she needed to add anything else whether asked of her or not by the questions [eg in an invitation, whether you are asked, you should ask the invitee to respond by a particular time] as she was not clear about the purpose of the text. DD also got a little confused with compo writing as in this section, a typical 15/15 answer sounded to her “disjointed” and “robotic”. If your child is good, he/she can do a better piece which is fluent and reads well; but for a child who is not as strong, sometimes, writing more means more mistakes. For DD, I kept it simple – understand the purpose of the text required of the student, memorise and regurgitate the form [although in these modern days, even the form is not cast in stone], maintain the correct “voice” in the form of writing – formal/semi-formal/informal, get the marks for the questions asked by almost answering them ‘comprehension” style – just answer the question directly with details from the passage [ eg. If the wallet is stated to be brown and the question asks “What did he lose? The answer would be “He lost a brown wallet” and not just “He lost a wallet”. I also taught DD some “trite” phrases and how to use them – Eg in a commendation: “I commend your staff for their excellent service and wish your company all the best in your future endeavours”; in a request: “I do hope that you will consider my request favourably” or “I look forward to hearing from you”. DD found some of these ‘old-fashioned” but diligently memorised them anyway.
By way of corrections, if the piece was poorly attempted, she would re-do the entire piece and from these repetitions, much of the language [including the more awkward formal phrases] was internalised. The completed pieces with the corrections were placed into a file and for revision, DD looked through the file and in particular at the mistakes she had earlier made.
The school gave out good notes which highlighted parts of texts which were often areas where the students lost marks, so we put these notes in our file too and revised them as well. A lot of marks are given to form, eg “Dear Sir,” so this is important to note so as not to lose marks unnecessarily.
Overall, DD’s situational writing was never very elegant but it was structured, purposeful with an appropriate tone adopted.

Side Note on the \"correction tape experiments\": Ah... the things we do for our kids 🙂
          Hi,

request you to post the picture of the book you recommend from oxford essentials series :please: . there are so many available on the MC site that I got confused figuring which one you are mentioning as a good material 😓

          thank you

But the 2011 PSLE Discussion and 2013 PSLE Discussion are all here? Should have some continuity from year to year so that parents can find better. If move 2012 to P6, then people will wonder what happened to 2012 when 2011 and 2013 are both here.

              Hi mother 777

I am severly IT challenged :(.

I copied the below from the link I provided but the pics of the books are not showing up; anyway, the 2 books relevant for Situational Writing are called P6 - Writing & P6 PSLE Preparation. The below text describes the contents of these books.

              P6 Writing
A comprehensive text to help you with all your writing requirements for PSLE. This is not an assessment book although exercises are provided. It gives comprehensive instruction and ideas to pupils who want to write better essays. The book covers both continuous and situational writing and takes pupils from writing at the word, sentence, and paragraph level to planning at the text level. Rubrics for self-evaluation are given and a section on text types can also be found in the situational writing section.

              P6 PSLE Preparation
Doing some last minute revision? This PSLE Preparation book gives students concise and effective tips to help them through the final revision period. Topics in the book cover comprehension, writing, oral communication, listening and a section on exercising your mind. Trial examination papers are included.

I actually bought most of the series for my own education [but not grammar and vocab] and found them useful reads for the parents.

              Hope this helps 🙂

Hi I am new here. I found all the tips very useful, especially from psle2011mum. Thank you so much for all your efforts and the sharing. For English comprehension (OE), anyone has recommendations on a good book for practice for P6 PSLE? My DD is taking PSLE this year. Thanks!
