Kid's mobile phone - how to prevent loss
-
How would you prevent your kid losing the “expensive” mobile phone? Mine recently lost it in school and we only managed to get it back after a tiring ordeal by reporting police, getting the teacher’s help etc…
Kids being kids will always be losing things. How can we prevent this? I need her to bring the phone so that we can contact her after school to ensure that she is back home safely, due to her having to stay for remedial and what nots. -
I also want to know if there is more that I can do. Currently, I can only remind my kids to be careful and mind their things - wallet, watch, handphone etc. To be on the safe side, I cap the budget for these purchases so that I wont feel the pinch if they lose the items. My son just lost his watch yesterday.
BTW, did you record the IMEI number of your son's handphone. You need it to disable the phone and SIM card can be replaced. -
Yeah…I did record the IMEI number. First thing I did when I got it.
However, the IMEI is quite useless. I don’t think the telcos will assist you to track it or anything, or even turn it off. It is probably used if it is involved in some serious crime. -
i give my daughter an old phone of mine, more than 4 years old. so even if she loses it, it’s still not that bad. And she got a hi-card instead of subscription. that prevents much hassle / heartache etc if she loses it.

Yes, definitely cannot sign plan for children. Use prepaid instead. I did started her off with a cheap phone (that died after six months)...and then got her this for her birthday present. Chidren nowadays want high tech stuff too. -
Yuup, cheaper phone, prepaid card and lanyard for the
very clumsy (always drop phone) or for the less careful.
If bringing to school, think they have those pouches with
the springy chains attached to them. Bring everywhere,
cannot leave in school bag. -
But cannot bring along in pocket during PE.
Exam time also not allowed cos some kids use mobile phone to cheat. -

Oh...actually, not supposed to bring phone to school...and if got, need to report to teacher. But what to do? Nowadays, my girl need to come home from school and her own....so if to be able to locate her in case any problems. But cannot bring along in pocket during PE.

super_dad, I don’t know of any school that allows mobile phones. But schools understand that some parents need their kids to have them so they close one eye, as long as usage is outside of class/school time and out of classroom. And it is off/on vibration mode always.
-
Yes schellen,
Its more case by case basis, i suppose…
My friend’s daughter brings to her school.
Everyday… but prior to the allowance, kena
declare with the school first on its necessity.
PE shorts got zipper.
She only turns it on during recess and after
school hours. Class in session, handphone
is turned off. -
Yes yes…I think they generally close one eye.
I heard that there is a Singtel service that tracks where the phone is…not sure if it is still there. It might be useful in times like this when the phone is lost. -
Hmmm...read in the papers today (straits time) that there are software that you can buy to do tracking. Interesting....wondering where to get it, and what are the phone requirements :?
-
there is one for phones on Singtel lines.

Unfortunately, I am on Starhub. Looking for one that works with Starhub...... -
Mine has been bringing a phone since P4 as I need to pick him after school. Special permission slip must be carried at all times. Phone can only be turned on outside school gate.
-
Our school allows mobile phone as long as it is registered with the school. The school will tag the phone.
It is put on silent mode all the time. Good for doing sms & emergency situations.
As for lowering the possibility of loss, keep a low profile that she owns one. Also we give a very cheap and uninteresting model bought overseas and it uses hi card.
So far so good. -

why not a Redmi ? -
2G sms /call services will be phased out next year, so do get handsets that can support at least 3G networks.

Anyone has a good recommendation for a location tracker app for kids phone that can’t be easily switched off?
