if the EOS 7D were to become a white elephant, I will offer myself to be a karang guni man
err.. insider.. i think everyone here is already eyeing the eos 7D that you haven't even bought.. :rotflmao:
i think the EOS 600D might be a more reasonable choice for students.
btw, must it be a DSLR? many of the semi-pro point-and-shoot cameras can be almost just as good, and without the hassle of changing lenses.
the troublesome thing about getting a DSLR is that you'd probably need to get a few different lenses to shoot different subjects. and each lens can easily cost a few hundreds. -
I would recommend John 3:16, if you goto Clubsnap Forum, I think overall they have pretty good reviews as being honest in their dealings. ... http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/threads/445871-Guide-Price-Outlet-Service-List?p=4589628#post4589628
I didnt get my DSLR from them as back then I was shopping around and needed a shop that has the time to explain slowly to a layman like me. John 3:16 is usually very packed so it helps if you already know what you want and then go in straight away order. My only experience was when I wanted to get a spare original Mfr battery for my cam, I almost bought from a shop in Peninsula who quoted me SGD80 for the battery. As their stock was out, I walked back to Funan and went into John 3:16. The first quote John 3:16 gave me was SGD65 for the original battery which is a good SGD15 bucks cheaper then the shop at Peninsula...
Anyway I am using a Nikon D7000 and loving it... Your son dun wanna consider Nikon?
Re your question on dry box... If he uses his camera very often i.e. will operate the camera maybe at least weekly, think he can still do without. I have a friend who carries his camera around all the time and he does not use a dry box as his camera is almost always ON. If he is like me due to time constraints I may touch my camera once in a few weeks type, may be better to consider a dry box. I bought a digital dry cabinet to store my camera body and a few lens... May be a worthwhile investment (for the dry cabinet) since you are already spending thousands on the camera.
Maybe you can check out this thread... On buy/sell CANON stuff, maybe can find some good buy there: http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/forums/102-Buy-Sell-Canon-Equipment
One guy selling off a mint 7D: http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/threads/955873-WTSell-DSLR-Canon-7D-BRAND-NEW-fulll-box -
insider:
According to him, his camera will be used to make short movies as well (he has to do a few of movies project during his 3 years course). I know minimal about cameras and what they are capable of doing (cameras can be used to shoot HD movies??).
Anyway, am going to Sim Lim now to look see look see, whether to buy a D7 or a 60D. We have agreed to buy subject to him working during his one month holidays for my friend moving cartons to pay me back 50% of the camera cost. Mum doesn't print $$$...
So far the lowest I can find is $2550 incl GST with cash payment. If really become white elephant, then will sell it off as a second hand.
PS: Is it necessary to buy a dry box for this type of camera? Sigh...one cost after another...
Sim Lim :scared: :yikes: :faint: -
7D can do hd video? I don't remember. The eos 600d does a good job though

Wow insider fast hand fast leg, say go only then buy already lol...
Can check here for a gauge of the price for dry cabinets: http://www.reddotphoto.com.sg/ecommerce/cat_viewproducts.php?catid=5
The dry cabinet I bought is the 48L AIPO. So far ok for me, but my friend bought same time as me (beginning of the year) said his humidity sensor went haywire already: http://www.clubsnap.com/forums/threads/716073-AIPO-Dry-Cabinet-Distributor-%28Singapore%29?highlight=dry+cabinet
Yeap Clubsnap is the forum to go for all things on photography. Lots of sharing there... Sometimes worth checking out the 2nd lens there cos this is fairly expensive hobby  -
7D is a good camera (I used it before I lost the whole package  )
IMHO, Maybe you would get 550D in bargain price compare to 600D as the feature I could say 99 persen similar.
But please get a prime lens to go with it.
Alan Photo, Cathay Photo or TK Photo Funan are good camera shop. PM me if you need further asst.

insider:
Fortunately you ended up with Alan Photo in Sim Lim, which is still Ok. For some notorious reasons Sim Lim is not the place to shop for camera.
Bought this from Alan Photo (after combing the whole of Sim Lim):
BTW the tripod that comes with the package is not good enough if your son is into filming and serious photography. If the battery is a third party , it only costs around $45.
I think it is good to get the 2 or 3 years extended warranty. -
7d is overkill for a newbie… 1100D is more worth and really force him to learn the basics of photography.
To get good pictures, invest in a good lens. Any camera body can deliver reasonable results, but a good lens can make the difference… usually.
Almost all critical photographic parameters are greatly affected by the lens, such as Aperture, DoF, focal length, IS etc…
What does an expensive camera body gives? better body build, faster AF? more AF points? ISO 256000? better viewfinder? higher frame rate? Most of it doesn’t produce a "better" picture (unless in sports), or produce a picture at the expense of quality (noisy picture at ultra high ISO)…
There is very little that an expensive camera can give but an entry DSLR cannot give… BUT there is plenty that a Good/expensive lens can give but a kit/cheap lens cannot give…
JMHO… -
Agree with he rest that J316’s service is 1 of the better one… (if you can get their attention first, that is…)… However, their price tends to be on the higher side…
slrrev seems to have quite attractive pricing… -
looks like we have quite a few photography enthusiasts around ~
might be fun to start a club in the Newbies & Clubs corner to share photography and camera tips?
