Q&A - P1 Math

Hi,


My DD subscribe to Maths +venture and I find that their explanation and teaching methods using number bonds and breaking up numbers helped my DD understand the concepts.

It is a good supplement to the school textbook.

My DD faced some problems with interpreting and understanding the questions in her school Maths worksheet. After reinforcing the teaching methods, she can now grasp and do her Maths worksheets with little help from me.

I need some help here. My child is rather weak in maths. Right now for p1 they are doing add by making 10s and using ones to add. However between these 2 methods, she is very confuse and don't understand n keep doing wrong despite I taught her many times? Any advice to help my child? Thanks

Try to ensure that your child's number bond below 10 foundation is strong. Once she understand number bond. Above is easy.

You can buy good quality unifix cubes from Amazon. Unifix cubes are good concrete materials for children to manipulate. There is so much you can do with unifix cubes, from practising fine motor skill to counting, adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing, patterning and measuring.

This thread is so good! Can I ask, which are good books for more challenging math problems.

My son is almost done with fan math and step by step Maths.

I was looking at Andrew Er at popular. Any other authors that are good? Pls do advise. Looking forward to hearing from you all helpful souls.

Hi Mama,

Fan Math and step by step Maths are the best for lower primary Maths in the market.
If your son can do both these - all the other authors/books should be chicken feet for him.

To be honest, he has been exposed to these books n learning from them but not really mastered the concepts. In fact, he may have got only 50 percent.


I do need him to practice more. Maybe I correct myself that I need more practice and not really challenging practice.

Haha! Perhaps will just pick a book to built on what he has learned. Although there are some topics we are yet to cover.

Mama, isn’t your son in K2?

Wow that’s very impressive that your K2 boy can do P.1,Maths books whether challenging or normal level…he is like 1year advanced…so impressive!!

I’m humbled sweet baby! Yes, I try to stretch him a bit! After boys need to be pushed. But yes, he is still learning concepts of p1 like starting multiplication soon, I was lucky to find a centre who can accommodate to his needs as he is not a fit in k2 either. So altho not fully at par with p1 the teacher gives him special attention to fill in his gaps.


But let’s see what happens in future, too early to comment. Besides, one good soul at this forum was the one who advised me to try p1 math if possible if kid is a bit comfy with simple stuff and see how it goes…!!!

Hi Mama, while this is good - your challenge will be how to sustain your son's interest while in school. Your son would have already been well prepared (as he has done it before at home) and so may tend to be disruptive in class as he will find it boring to be taught what he already knows. Teachers will then label him as being disruptive and causing behavioural problems.

This is a true life scenario that happened to my friend early this year and as a result, the teacher called the mom to school and gave the mum an earful. that's why teachers say that it is best for parents/centres to teach the concept after the school has taught them rather than before!!
