        Hi just888,

Thank you so much for your kind reply.
Really need more advice from you as I still couldn’t figure it out. As there are 8 triangles, should there be 8 lines lines cutting through the triangles and 8 lines in between every 2 triangles?

        TIA

            Hi Usaik,

I said 4 coz, the line cutting through 1 of the triangle is the same line as the one cutting through the triangle opposite it. Therefore we do not consider 2 lines, but count as 1 instead. Hence total for the figure is 8.

As u see in the http://www.education.vic.gov.au/studentlearning/teachingresources/maths/mathscontinuum/space/Sp35001aP.htm shared by tianzhu.

Sorry guys, but i beg to differ. From tianzhu’s link, we can see from illustration 2 that a line can have another one running next to it, and it is counted differently. Thus, i think 8 is the correct answer…

                Hi all,

Need help for the following question:
                --------------------------------------------
There are a total of 28 chickens and cows in a farm. If the total number of cows’ legs is 40 more than the total number of chickens’ legs, find the number of
                a) chickens in the farm (answer: 12)
                b) cows in the farm (answer: 16)
Is it possible to get the answer without using ‘Guess & check’ method?
                Thanks in advance.

                  Hi

Your question is similar to this one, apply the same strategy and you should be able to solve it.

There are 44 cars & bicycles. There are 128 more car wheels than bicycles. How many car and bicycle are there?

For every increase of 1 chicken, the difference in the number of legs drops by 6

                  112 - 40 ----- 72
                  72/6 ----- 12

                  Chickens ----- 12
                  Cows ----- 16

                  Best wishes.

Hi Muffins, thank you for sharing. Yes the answer is 8 and Just888 was responding to a query I made on how many lines are there cutting through the triangles. Thank you.

                      3) Lisa has 5 bags of apples and 3 boxes of mangoes. The number of apples in each bag is the same as the number of mangoes in each box. There are 56 fruits altogether. How many apples does Lisa have?

                      6) 30 children attended a party. Each girl ate 3 chicken wings and each boy ate 4 chicken wings. The boys ate 36 more chicken wings than the girls. How many boys attended the party?

                        Hi

Please refer to this link. There is a similar type of question.

There are some hens and cows on a farm. These animals have a total of 18 heads and 56 legs. How many cows and how many hens are there on the farm?

                        http://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=149&hilit=cows+hens&start=970

                        Assume all were motorcycles.

                        28*2 ----- 56
                        78 - 56 ----- 22
                        22/2 ----- 11

                        11 cars.

                        Best wishes
