My dd is weak in her foundation. Which assessments should I get to help her improve?

      Which level is she in?
For lower primary, my dh, who coaches dd in Maths, has been very pleased with the Complete Maths Guide from EBP.

From Justin Tutors’ tuition coordinator: Many of our tutors had recommended using Visible Thinking in Mathematics 6 for PSLE math preparation as it comprises of many challenging psle math word problems.

We just followed the school's schedule. If the school did multiplication in Week 5 (say) and had planned a topical assessment in Week 7, we would complete the multiplication chapter from the Complete Math Guide in Week 6.

This book is good for practising and reinforcing the concepts - my dh highly recommends it - but it is not enough by itself. You do need another assessment book specifically for challenging word problems.

My boy's teacher may be getting onsponge for them to do in class in p5. Should we get another copy to do at home? Ifnot, can any one recommend a similar type math assessment? Ie notes in front followed by heuristics problem sums. Thanks.

There are problem sum books by Andrew Er and by Terry Chew which are similar. However, for a book using the same types of models as the OnSponge books, I recommend Ammiel Wan's Challenging Maths Problems Made Easy. I had started on the forum a thread asking about this book. Thereafter, I worked through the book to understand the 11 types of problem sums categorized and explained in the book. These are the same 11 types of sums that are taught in the OnSponge books.

For kids that need practices for similar problem sums, then GLM effective problem-solving methods for upper primary maths is a very good choice.
