Hi, I need help for the following Qn:


If the price of a Barbie doll is reduced by 25%, a loss of $1.20 will be incurred.
If its price is reduced by 10%, a profit of $0.30 will be incurred.
Find the loss or profit incurred if a barbie doll is sold for $13.40.

15% of sale price--> 1.20+0.30=1.50
So, sale price --> 10.00
cost price --> 75% x 10 + 1.20 = 8.70
$13.40 - $8.70 = $4.70 profit

2)The pages of a book are numbered 1 to 99. Find the difference between the sum of all the odd pages and the sum of all the even pages.

3)The ratio of the number of red apples to the number of green apples in a box is 4 : & . If 18 more apples are added into the box, the number of red apples will be equal to the number of green apples. How many apples are there in the box ?

If Daniel gives 10 pens to Kester, Daniel's : Kester's = 2u : 1u

So, number of pens daniel has : number of pens kester has
= 2u + 10 : 1u - 10

If Daniel gives 6 pens to Kester,
Daniel : Kester
= 2u + 10 -6 : 1u -10 + 6
= 2u + 4 : 1u - 4
= 3 : 1

cross-multiply --> 2u + 4 = 3u - 12
1u = 16

Number of pens kester has --> 1u - 10 = 16 - 10 = 6

1-2+3-4+5-6+7-8 ....+97-98 +99
1-2=-1
3-4=-1
5-6=-1
...
1-2+3-4+5-6...+97-98 = -49
so, 1-2+3-4+5-6+7-8 ....+97-98 +99 = 50

Many thanks for your quick reply. It took me a while to digest your explanation …(especially your reply to Fat Mama)… finally got it! How easy it is to misinterpret math questions!

I need a little more help on the question on vanilla and chocolate. I am able to get the answer, but my answers are derived from some cross-multipying… a little too overwhelming for my daughter. You have a fantastic way of making complex things so simple… do you mind to show your working? I shall wait patiently, seeing this is the CNY season.

This is a question on “double if”. The “if” in the statement signifies the event didn’t really happen. You may solve it with UM or MD.

Actually, “cross multiply” is the same as equalising the final parts.

In “cross multiply” students need to open up or expand brackets, this is covered in Sec 1 Math.
So long as students are comfortable with expansion of brackets, they can use it.

For this slide, I’ve added in an extra table (light blue) to show the steps taken for equalisation of final parts.

Cross-multiplying is the same as equalizing the parts! Why didn’t I think of it thus??!! I just knew you’d throw in some light! Thank you very much!. You have a good year ahead, too!
