All About Choosing Piano Schools And Teachers
-
Hi, my area is at east coast area.

Is a very interesting forum. I would like to share my opinion. I’m a piano teacher which I don’t have a diploma in music. I’ve been teaching for 14 years.
After so many years of teaching, I reckon be it qualification, experience, teaching method, timing and etc. most importantly is the chemistry between the teacher and the student.
1st- if there is no chemistry between student and teacher no matter how good is the teacher, the student will still lost the interest or rather need a push factor to carry on.
2nd- no matter how low and how flexible is the teacher willing to be or how enthusiastic the student is, the chemistry is still important in order to made the lesson fun and interesting.
However, as for the fees, I guess is varies and it depends on varies of reasons.
1st- etiquette of the teacher
2nd- transportation cost
3rd- experience and qualification of the teacher
Lastly, when a parent looking for a piano teacher or any other teacher, I guess it must depends on what are the parent looking for in terms of the teacher.
Good luck to all -

To be fair, there are many excellent teachers who have stopped practicing and do not maintain any permanent repertoire, though of course they are still able to demonstrate passages from pieces they are teaching if needed to.
I do get your point. But I didn't think it was unreasonable to expect one line of simple music in tune, especially given that Suzuki method is supposed to produce students who can play by ear. She went off key. Anyway, I never went back there again.ammonite:
I really doubt the music school actually screen their teachers.
That sounds really bad. Your post reminds me of the time I went to check out a music school for Suzuki violin classes for my little one. When I asked the teacher to play something simple for my son, she played Twinkle Twinkle Little Star which my son did not know. I asked her to play Pachelbel's Canon in D for my little one instead, thinking that was a simple and beautiful tune that would definitely make him fall in love with the violin.
OMG, she was horribly out of tune. We ran out as quickly as we could. No way I am going to pay for a Suzuki violin teacher who can only play Twinkle Twinkle Little Star!! Never went back to that music school again. -

The Suzuki teacher you describe was probably never trained in the Suzuki method herself, or she just had really horrible technique or ear. Anyway you made the right decision, if cannot even demonstrate one line, something is very wrong.
