Check with your daughter, which is her preferred choice, Poly or JC?

I asked DD1 and she picked CJC. She wanted something like a continuation of sec sch. She is not ready going to a “mini university” (referring to poly) yet.

Plus at 16yo, she had no idea what she wanted to do. Psychology, nursing, Biz Admin etc. all sound interesting to her.

If the kid chooses to go CJC, then our role is to support them, make sure they do well to be within the top 40% of CJC cohort. Then it is quite safe for her to get a place in the local Uni !!!

PS: There is a revamp of A levels grading system from RP90 to RP70. Hope this helps in reducing the stress of A level students. :rahrah:
Yes, this Pioneering 2024 batch where Project Work (A-level) is only a Pass or Fail : is a relief.

For students who cannot do work consistently, better don't go Poly, because not suitable. If struggle to keep up consistently, very hard to get a good GPA, at the end of 3 years in Poly. Because inside Poly, life is kind of relaxed. If u dont want to study, nobody bother nor keep track of u. 3 years, is not a short time.

By changing RP ( 90 to 70 ), what impact will there be, in terms of admission to university faculty courses ?

Do u mean ELL (English Language and Linguistics)?

If any KSP knows anyone who has taken ELL as H2 subject, please let me know; I’d like to find out more![/quote]
MOE ELEP, incl taking ELL. Can apply for scholarship too. See link below. Only offered by 3 JCs. Can read more abt it in reddit. Students there shared quite a bit abt it.

I feel that the newly revamped A level grading system to 3H2 plus only pass/fail for PW will relieve some stress from the future A level students.

I read from Reddit, students from this lower tier JC cried foul because vast majority of them did not get A for PW. However, vast majority of the students from top tier JC were awarded with As for PW. I am not sure if there is any bias to begin with.

Plus there are other complaints like slackers got A but not those really hardworking ones. Therefore, just a Pass or Fail should bring some cheer to students, especially those in mid and lower tier JCs !

My son was trying to decide between JC and Poly. His results were average (12-2 =10) and felt he had no chance for the better JCs. End up choosing to apply for NA poly (9-2=7) and felt he had a better chance of entering a course he'll prefer.

Realized that students now a days are avoiding JCs with the mindset that its very academic and with huge homework loads. My concern now is that I heard only 1/3 or less poly graduate makes it to U as compared to 75% of JC students. How true are these numbers. 😞

In Poly seems can get more options on the courses and the courses sound interesting. One of my biggest worry is lack of self discipline as no more fixed time to school. We only selected 1 JC that is within score range…now I am hoping for JC.

The numbers are true, but not all students and schools are the same. Since more of the higher-scoring students opt for JCs, it's not surprising that a higher percentage go to university. It doesn't mean that if the grades of the students were the same, some magic happens in JCs that makes it more likely for the student to qualify for university. Even between JCs, some (where the students enter with better grades) generally have higher proportions of students going to university. There are a couple of JCs where the proportion going to university is also about 30%. So if your child would probably have qualified for university had he gone to JC, it's not going to be very different if he goes to poly. In fact, some students tell me it's more likely that they will go to university through poly - no MTL, no GP, and they are often willing to go to SIT, SUSS, etc. rather than only consider the big 3.
