Ha ha, sorry, guess I was writing from my impression - always felt that SAP schools are where the smart kids go and GEP schools are where the geniuses go! Us mere mortals end up in normal schools... 😄

        Hi Citygirl,

SAP schools use Higher Chinese and English as first languages.

before discontinuing with HCL, please consider the implication of not having it when entering secondary school

from what i know, most schools discourage the dropping of HCL unless it is in dire situation

and SAP schools cater for mere mortals as well - in fact the mere mortals form the majority in SAP schools still, and th GEPpers are the minority in the SAP schools

I think you're on the wrong forum! The SAP here refers to \"Special Assistance Plan\" schools - where bright children go to receive an education that is a par above the rest.

I believe you're referring to SAP the software?
this is hilarious ...... Special Assistance Plan schools of MOE versus the SAP school (ERP software training school) running training courses for SAP .....

HCL should be dropped if the child faces difficulties and doing badly at P4.
Neighbour has a son in P5 this year...she told me the teacher will advise students to drop HCL for normal Chinese. But if the parents insist on the child doing HCL at P5, then child must hit a certain grade in CA1 or else drop it.

IMO, parents should not force their child to take HCL if their child has problem coping with it. It might have adverse effect and causing the child to reject the language totally.

Better study normal chinese and enjoy it.

If the child has to spend a lot more time on HCL, then he/she should drop it at P5. From what I understand, even normal Chinese is not easy either.

My son is in P4 this year…in a SAP school. Most prob I will ask him to drop it bcos his other subjects are getting tougher, esp Math.

What I heard from dd CL teacher (Non SAP School), once the children are chosen or appeal to taken HCL in P5, they are not allowed to withdraw in the midst of P5. They have to stay on until the end of P5 then can chose to opt out. Therefore have to assess the child ability carefully otherwise it would be very torturing if have problem coping with it.

If the child didn't do well at the end of P4 for HCL, then his teacher will encourage him to drop it and go for normal Chinese at P5. But neighbour told me that if the child's parents insist on him/her continuing it at P5 and yet don't make it at CA/SA, then would still need to drop.

                        I see my son's P4 textbook. :scared: it's really tough esp 4B.
