some parents are deluded to think that being charged a high price means must be good, and surprisingly when the child got into GEP (due to his/her own ability rather than anything else), then the parents credit it to the money \"well spent\"...

this is a wake up call that GE ability could not be trained. if the kids have it, they have it. if not, it is just wasting money and pressuring the kids needlessly. parents should understand why SBGE ends at sec 2.
I was about to ask if Gep prep classes are really effective. I always think gifted means gifted, no need artificial aids prior to/during the gep selection. Hence don't quite understand why need prep class :scratchhead:

Is this chap the only one offering gep prep class? Ok, I am just curious - is gep prep class common/popular?

Please do not send your kids for GEP training. It's a program meant for the naturally gifted, not for wannabes. The latter suffer having to get tutored to keep up. I've seen some in my daughter's class like these, it's a sorry sight ...

Is there such thing as into gep but cannot make it and turn back to normal stream? Erm... You know, non gep class? Or entered gep, cannot make it then die there?

          Mychildren:

Frankly speaking, I wonder nowadays GEPers are real gifted or not? Or they got in because they've spent $$ for the preparation? :scratchhead:

I never had tuition, other than Chinese tuition. That's because my dad is a Cantonese and my mum is a Teochew, they can't speak Mandarin.

          Want to test me? 😄

I signed up for KSP because I hope to dispel the rumours that tuition can buy results in everything, even for the GEP.

Don't send your kids for GEP tuition. If they get into the GEP, struggle and require more tuition to survive, others who got in without tuition and can survive with no problems (like me) won't be sympathetic.

I definitely agree. My dd who did not have any special GEP training, got into GEP. Though her results throughout the GEP program were not fantastic (that is, not at the top, neither was she at the bottom too), she did not have any tuition (other than Chinese as she grew up in Aus and joined Spore sch 4th term in Pr1).

Being such potato, she passed her MT in P1 SA2 (like i said she joined P1 4th term, that is she has only 2 mth to prepare, not bad for someone who doesnt grow up with the language, never taken the language at all). She scored A for PSLE Chinese and B for HMT (quite good for someone who hates Chinese)

Yes there are cases that kids decided to go back to mainstream school or class.

I think many tuition centres try to catch on the wave. If I remember correctly, Learning Lab, MindStretcher, etc. offer GEP prep.

I heard about a handful went into GEP but \"cant cope\", not \"cant make it\". Yes they turned back to mainstream (after 1st year) although very few. That's what i heard from the school. I asked the school as i was worried bcos DD was lazy and no tuition. Having said that, i think most parents, die die will pile the kids with a lot of tuition to make sure they cope right? Or \"outsource\" projects (that is parents/older sister or bro/relative do for them).

\"Cant cope\" - the GEP program is extensive and can be stressful. Things moved very fast. The child needs to be a fast thinker. When i teach a mainstream kid, i work faster than him/her. When i teach my DD (sit down doing the qtn together), I'll be at working step #2 but she already at #8 and gave me the ans.

In P4, they already learnt most of P5 work and in P5, already completed most of P6 syllabus. In P6, they learn some S1 & S2 stuff. Not just the syllabus, but the depth of the topic and the expectations. Social Studies is an examinable subject. The many projects and reports throughout the program.

The exam paper format is different too. For eg. in Eng, in mainstream editing passage, the paper would have highlighted/underline the \"mistake\". In GEP, you are given the whole passage without any \"hint\", the student is to identify the mistake. Like teacher marking the paper.

Yes there are cases that kids decided to go back to mainstream school or class.[/quote]Yes, one of my DS1's classmates dropped out of GEP at the end of P4.. He did not go back to his former primary school or transfer to mainstream in his GEP primary school. Instead, he chose to join another new primary school to do his P5 & P6 (mainstream), perhaps to start everything on a clean slate..

My DS1 met him again at RI this year (Sec-1)..

So, GEP or mainstream, as long as one is willing to work hard, one can still do well in PSLE and go to one's dream school.. :celebrate:

TLL does not offer GEP prep classes. So far, I think the ctrs are MindStretcher, Dr Peh and Aristocare. Morris Allen has prep class for GA in Jun. TLL offers GEP classes for P4-P6 GEP kids though. I know of parents in my DS’s sch who send their GEP kids to at least 2-3 tuitions in TLL, ie Eng, Sc & Math.

My child did not go for any prep class and is now in an intermingling class for HA (High Ability)kids. Heard that a GEP kid just joined his intermingling class this term. Seems that he could not cope with the work there. This kid was fm a non-HA (High Achiever) class in P3, so it was a suprise when he got in GEP. The rumour was that he could be prepped.

Yes, there are a few children who go back to mainstream after being in GEP for a few months because they can’t cope.

Then there are those who struggle all through their 3 years in GEP. Always at the bottom of the cohort. It’s very demoralizing, especially when it’s DSA season and you see your classmates getting multiple COs from the top school and you didn’t clear GAT.

Some effects of this low morale can be long term.
