My boy didn't seem to benefit from concept math and scored quite badly for his WA1. I'm quite upset. Anyone can recommend a more effective maths center or tutor?
For group tuition, it is unlikely that they will brush up an individual’s math skills for a certain topic specifically for a test. eg. WA1.

I see that your son only joined them in Feb this year? Maybe give it more time or switch to 1-1 if he needs more help with the subjects already covered by the tuition center.

high time for you to look for a \" customized \" tuition teacher, who can help your son on focussing those Maths topics he facing difficulty in understanding. Group tuition won't help because as go forward, they will just keep accumulating practise more & more Maths topics, but never address those topics that your son been struggling with.

What is the beauty of having personalized one to one tuition ? So that he can go deeper into those weaker topics of his. For those topics that's no issue encountered, just go faster pace. But for those topics that he is weak in, need more time to practise more. Can u achieve this, in a group tuition setting ? No, cannot. Why ? Because everyone is being \"pushed along\", to follow the common pace set by the group tuition Teacher. If your kid keep remain in his current group tuition centre, end up you waste further time and $.

        A word of caution.
When u hire 1:1 Maths tutor, pls don't hire those \"fly by night\" kind of tutor. Eg. Just Finish A-level, awaiting for results, want to enter university soon, that kind of tutor. To get a good seasoned tutor, look for those that have been teaching primary school Maths, for many many years.

You might want to check out the following list of Top 5 Math tuition specialists for PSLE and Primary School here : https://www.kiasuparents.com/kiasu/forum/viewtopic.php?f=92&t=100437

In your son's case, he might benefit better from personalized 1-1 tutoring, to do intensive revision of the topics he has difficulties with. One major benefit of 1-1 tutoring is the ability of the tutor to customize the syllabus, and speed that the topics are taught, to your son's learning capability.

Out of the 5 Top PSLE Math tuition specialists, I know that https://www.visiblemath.com.sg/ and http://www.nicklebeetutors.com/ provides personalized 1 - 1 tutoring upon request.

Maths has always been his best subject since young so I was quite shocked why did he deteriorate so badly this year sighs. He didn’t even need any tuition in the past 3 years and can score full easily but I note he does start to struggle last year hence I have put him in tuition since start of this year.

Unfortunately, I do not have the budget to pay $100 an hour individual tutoring; I can only pay half of that sum. Anyone has recommendation of a good maths tutor?

            Thank you!

Is your child doing PSLE this year? Don't panic. The best tutor is still yourself. For my son doing PSLE, I collected a list of maths problems, sorted them out into the specific topics, and encouraged him to maintain it himself. For science, I started him on a mindmap, and then he continued building it up himself. Just before the exam, he would go through the problems and mindmaps. Seems to work fine for him. But he did go through several past year papers and I would pick up on those questions which he got wrong to flag out his weaknesses.

In the meantime, you can help him with the questions that he has difficulties in. Eg. Fractions, then u can work on the fractions section in his assessment book.

Allow him time to look through why he didn’t do well for the WA1. After his teacher goes through it, which areas were not previously understood by him? You can give him some more practice on those.

Thanks, but I think Concept Maths is really not so suitable. It only has a few problem sums per worksheet and I feel is solely inadequate.

Anyone can recommend a good maths tutor well-versed in problem sums? How is bluetree maths?

Actually, the question is more about the QUALITY of the sums, rather than the quantity. If it is careful in giving out the most difficult problems to match the known ability of the students, it is ok in giving out only a limited number of questions. It is tuition, after all; something extraneous outside of the normal school workload.

That said, there is indeed a need to \"drill\" students with test papers so that the format and questions become familiar to them. This should be done individually, outside of tuition as part of the students' own responsibility, if they wish to do well. I'm sure you don't want your child to spend his precious hours during tuition just working on lots of test papers.

That is true too; however, they only give out 4 guided examples and then 4 sums for hwk each worksheet. That is really abit too little to me.

Yes, but did you try to work on the problems yourself? If you feel they are quite tough, then it means the questions have been carefully selected to challenge the kids. If you can do them easily, then you are right, it's time to look for another tutor 🙂
