          Hi Parents,

I need your kind advise. My boy is in P1 this year. I realise he do quite badly for his math in the first semester.

I am thinking of giving him extra on Maths. But I can’t choose between Math Enrichment like MPM or Tuition like Mindstretcher

And If i put him now, is it too late for him to pick up ?

          hope to hear some advices.

          Thanks
          einleda

            Einleda,

Have you looked thru’ and analysed why he has done badly - carelessness? do not understand? not taught? Speak to the teacher to find out if needed, and check by testing your boy yourself.

If it is a case of carelessness, putting in tuition will not help. What you need is to get him to be more careful (use carrot / reward for checking and ensure no mistake).

If unable to understand, then you might need to ascertain his ability before you decide which tuition may benefit him.

Sometimes he is careless, but according to the teacher, by now he should be able to do addition within 10 by heart, however I realise my boy took a while to do the addition and subtraction, furthermore he need to use his fingers.

not sure whether is it I over-concerned, but i do worry if he like to use his fingers, he will have problems on addition within 20 and within 30.

Based on what you said, MPM is not going to help as they are more on thinking skills. Your boy’s foundation of ±x/ is not strong so you will slowness in computation and accurancy issue.

You can either consider building this foundation via Kumon or abacus or teach yourself, but there is need for practice to perfect this.

I send you a PM, please check your inbox.

                  Hi

I think i hv the same prob with my P1 son. But mine more on understanding concept. He is still using fingers on addition n subtraction and for prob sums, he couldnt quite understand wht the question wants…
Am thinking of putting him mindstretcher but i heard its more on enrichments as well so if my son is the type not wanting to ask(yes he is the shy type), he wont benefit such classes. So now not sure hw to handle this? Small group tuition maybe? Hw abt kip mcgrath? Anyone has any input on this?

My daughter has been learning math at home afterschool. I heard that MPM was good. But we are using beestar. The weekly worksheets are curriculum-based, full of all real life world problems, challenging stuff to help kids thinking. DD enjoys it a lot~~

If your main concern is more curriculum based and his foundation is not there, I would think that Math tuition is more suitable for him. Consider one to one tuition or small group tuition.
