RE: All About Finding & Evaluating Tutors
Steadyberry:
Never ever pay in advance to private tutors. I have had parents/students who owe me tuition fees. So now I will collect my tuition fees after every lesson. Fairer to all parties.Another incident, my ds came back with many mistakes in his work. When asked he, told me this is a completely new topic to him so he guess most of the answers. He also told me his tutor always start the lesson late. Then he will tell my ds which page to do. The tutor will eat his breakfast n read newspaper for very long. Then just bef I came to pick him up, the tutor will mark his work. When I picked my ds up, the tutor was only pretending to be teaching but in fact he spent almost the whole hr doing his own thing. Finally I asked my ds again. He told me the tutor is very fierce and he beat him before. So my ds won't dare to tell me anything unless I asked. I felt so guilty and stupid :stupid:
Actually there were more, but I won't continue. Finally aft so many unpleasant things happened, I quit. I lost my deposit, few lessons bec the tutors asked for fees 1 mth in adv and few more replacement lessons.
Few mths ago, my fren told me her ds's tutor has ran away. Same thing, her tutor collects money in advance n deposit too. She came for a few lessons but always late. Once she didn't turn up. Finally can't reach her. She was a teacher in a kindy. When my fren went to the kindy, she has resigned.
Pls be aware of tutors who collect deposits n fees in adv. Now my ds is in a private gr tuition. No deposits n we pay fees after 1 mth of lessons. If ds can't make it or sick, the tutor will deduct fees. -
RE: 2013 PSLE Discussions and Strategy

I would suggest looking through his work and focus on improving his weak areas. No point to keep practising past year exam papers.Hi I'm new to this site and forum. For parents whose children have gone thru PSLE, what would be the one take away you can share from the experience that most benefitted or helped your children to cope and do well for the exam.
My son is an average student (scored 2Bs & 2Cs) for P5 exams. How can I best make use of this school hols to better prepare him for P6 & the big exam? Some have advised to let him start practising past year exam papers, but will that cause a burn out too early? -

Miracle Child:
Pardon my ignorance  Is there such a thing as past PSLE papers that child can practise on? During my era (which is v long ago  ), there were those 10-year series for O levels and A levels...cannot recall for PSLE. Not sure about now...
Yes, they have the 5 years series. It should be out in late Jan or early Feb. -

RE: how to improve ur child's working memory?
U can try to do cognitive training. Play memory games, etc. I have attended a training on brain training before.

What happened?Finding the right tutor is abt chemistry.
I once thot that I found the best tutor, ex-school teacher with a passion for math........wot a mis-match. I wouldn't go to her even if she tutors for free....
I prefer tutor who will take time to understand a child's weakness and tailor the program for each .... possible to get that in yr matching service?

Please do not be overly sad. PSLE is just a milestone. Starting secondary school life is like writing on a clean slate again. Usually, writing on a clean slate again becomes easier and yields better results.
It hit me when we reached home...my son cried in the toilet while I hid myself and cried. We just couldn't believe but it is a fact.janet_lee88:
Hi Janet, I'm sure you tried very hard. It's not the end of the world and don't let it be.
I had to battle my tears and be there for my boy. Hopefully next year they'll grow up and do better. I'm sure our boys tried the best they can and that's what matters. In time to come they will blossom.
Although he cleared 4As t-score was low. He broke down in school after exclaiming \"how come like that?\". I swallowed my tears. We walked out of school with him in tears.
Trust me, I have seen people around me done well in secondary schools after their psle.
Me too
