nope.. the conquer one is rather challenging and at times, daunting. The essential one will be better to help boost his confidence (as he wasn’t doing well only recently) by building on his good foundation. It covers but doesn’t have as many challenging problem sums. Of course, there are other math books which are useful as well.
Ah understood.. Grateful for your help!

Will consider getting both versions and see which is better suited for my kid.

The conquer version is good for honing the finer skills, it benefits children who are high ability or consistently scoring in the top 10% range.

Review of the \"ThinkingMath @ Onsponge\" Series (Ammiel Wan, Chris Rogers & Corine Quek; 2008)
Recommended for the Mid-Ability Math Student looking for that extra edge in PSLE Maths!

Review updated by Mr Zhou (NickleBee Tutors) in Dec 2015

The Onsponge books are an excellent resource (if a bit dated) for mid-ability students who require a comprehensive and systematic grounding of the various conceptual and procedural knowledge required to ace Problem Sums in the Math Paper 2.

I personally feel that the some of the procedural knowledge (problem-solving methods) as taught in the Onsponge Books are quite cumbersome and rather lacking in fineness as they seem geared towards higher ability students who already have a working knowledge of problem solving and are just looking for a boost to fine tune the nuances of their problem solving capability.

For other students who are still in the process of improving their problem solving skills, the way the books are structured has an unfortunate and unintended side-effect (if not taught correctly) of encouraging rote learning and blind application of methods (based on how the child thinks the question should be categorized) without understanding that problem solving is a process where the means is very much as important as the ends.

Just a note that we longer use the Onsponge books for our P4 to P6 students since 2015. Instead our students now use our proprietary \"NickleBee Math Problem Solving and Heuristic Worksheets\".

I would recommend that parents and educators use the \"Visible Thinking in Maths Series by Ammiel Wan\" to improve on their child's basic mathematical concepts (as tested in Math Paper 1) after which they should then follow up on \"GetMeThinking\" or \"OnSponge\" to further enhance their child's intermediate and advanced problem solving skills (as usually tested in Math Paper 2).

The ThinkingMath @ Onsponge can be bought from the ThinkingMath Webstore at http://www.onsponge.com/shop/thinkingmathshop.html
Nope. This reviewer has mostly negative feedbacks on this book, is recommending other books and he thinks it’s for mid range students.

Hmm.. maybe because the reviewer is from Nicklebee math, which cater to GEP & High-ability students..
So from his point of view, the conquer thinking math @ onsponge books are more for the mid range students.

Are you familiar with the 'get me thinking' books mentioned in the review? Comparing 'conquer onsponge' or 'get me thinking' which book is more useful for math high achievers?

I can't seem to find this 'get me thinking' in popular bookstore. Is it out of print? Only 2nd hand copies are available in carousell.

Standard for Get Me Thinking is pitched at a level higher than OnSponge. The books are only available at Visible Math Academy.

Debatable to say which is more useful.. but rather look at how motivated your child is, to do tough problem sums. Conquer is good enough for A1. If it’s still too easy for your child, try MO books.

Thank you for sharing! I am looking for such a resource. To target those 4-mark and 5-mark type of challenging psle math questions. I will be buying the https://www.visiblemath.com.sg/get-me-thinking-series from Visible math this weekend.

I have heard from the parent chatgroups, that these challenging 4-mark and 5-mark questions towards the back of paper 2 are \"maths olympaid\" and \"GEP heuristics\" type of questions. To help MOE differentiate between the primary 6 students scoring AL1 versus AL2. I hope that the get me thinking books will help in that area.

My kid is very motivated for maths and science. Not so much for the languages.

I will be getting the get me thinking books first and work from there. Maybe after that can move onto maths olympaid books.

I’m happy for you that your child loves math and sci! Hope he likes the “thinking” book, tell us how you find it. Might have to go down to their center to buy.
