      Hi

Since abacus might confuse the kids with number bonds taught in school, would learning finger maths be good enough? I am still hesitating between CMA and finger maths organised by cc. Anybody care to share your experience on finger maths classes?

My son has been taking lessons from CMA since 5yo. He is in P1 now. They are trained to \"see\" the abacus in the brain and training the brain to concentrate and compute as needed. It is certainly a good course to train the brain. But please do not expect it to be the alternative for learning maths.

In Primary school, english is important for them to do their maths well. Questions are tricky and they need to think. It has nothing to do with abacus or mental abacus. They are of course a tool where the kids can add faster and accurate. But purely to add, minus, multiply and division.

My younger son is also enrolled into the class as well. It is good to learn when younger. You will have to know the objective of what you want to acheive out of it. 😄 😄 😄

Try CMA abacus sch. im not sure if they hv branches in your neighbrhd, but u can chk them out from the web. My ds hs bn there since 4yo, now he is 6, finishing the mental arithmetic. They really count fast, im amazed, cant compete with him bt prepare for home work to do.

There is a CMA at B201 Tampines. You can try that. It is never too late. I just started my DS1 who is going P1 on Abacus too.

My kid went to CMA for 2 years and finally begged to stop. think he found the drilling too repetitive and boring…

Guess it’s different strokes for diff folks!

My advice is before you sign up for abacus, think if your kid is those type who wouldn’t mind repetitive h/w.

And also I feel CMA is too ex… friends found similar abacus teaching but at lower prices.

                    cheers

Glad to find some of you in the same shoes. 2 years ago, I explored it for my DS when he was 5 years old. After gathering some feedback, I dropped the idea. Early this year, in P1, he pestered me to let him take it up. He's a child who has a very strong passion, interest and aptitude for math. Thus he thought it is going to be very enriching for himself. We struggled for a long time as I know it's not something that you can stop anytime and still achieve some learning. (e.g. the child would still learn a few new vocab/grammar usage/new chinese characters/etc in other type of classes...unlike abacus mental arithmetic).

We gave in to his begging. He was with CMA for 2 terms. These 2 terms were a nightmare. We had to argue and quarrel over the homewk. He enjoyed the classes but nt the homewk. We never have any problem with his other homewk...except CMA's... He finally admitted when term 2 was coming to an end, that he enjoyed math but he found the repetition not to his liking. We talked about it and let him understand how we should approach such matters in future, not wanting him to think that he could start and stop classes as and when he likes...but in my heart...I was very happy he realised that and...I was very happy to stop the classes

Nightmare ended, and we are back to our happy times daily!

I do know that some children benefit from it. Guess we have to understand our children's character to determine the structure of learning they like. Mental arithmetic is a good-to-have skill but not essential, thus I don't see a need to force him.

Just my personal experience and opinion. But if you ask me if I regretted those 2 terms and the investment, I would say \"no\". Cos it has settled the thought that lingered in my mind \"Should I have let him tried when he was younger...\" At least I would not feel regretful that I did not let him try and wondered how it would be like if I had done so... Now we have tried and are happy that it's over. I would no longer feel envious of those children that benefitted alot from it and wondered if I should have let him try...we did
