I have intended to send my son for abacus course, but the minimal age is 4 years old and mine is 3. Does any one send their kid to those mental abacus course before? Does it work and help in mathamatics abilities?

I have a nephew that is 7 years old and he attended abacus course. He can actually do mental arithmetics quite well compared to my niece who is 8 years old that went for some traditional maths enhancement program who is much slower compared to my nephew. So my sis decided to send her to abacus course as well.

So I believe abacus does helps.

Abacus or finger math. I tried my son out for about 6 months in abacus, once per week, at the nearby community centre. They are first taught to use 1 hand to do all their math. Interesting, but it is really route math. It does help in mental sums, though.

The thing that got me interested in abacus is the mental abacus. Saw documentaries on how this kids can do maths computation faster than pressing calculator. Is that true?

The abacus has been a calculator to the chinese for eons. So yes, I'm sure children can be programmed to do that kind of speed math based on what they learn in abacus class.

The mental abacus calculation require the children to imaging the abacus in their mind. That will also help improve their memory and imagery capabilities. So I believe it is a very good skill to process. Trains lots of important abilities I would say.

http://www.edufarm.com.sg - looks like a tuition centre but with so-called 3G Abacus training. Seems to be at a number of blocks in Choa Chu Kang.
http://www.crestar.com.sg/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=28&Itemid=36 Check out their Choa Chu Kang branch. Appears to offer Abacus training for kids.
http://www.littleprofessors.com.sg has a Choa Chu Kang presence. You might want to try them to see if they let your kid join just the abacus class.
Or you might want to try your luck with a http://tutor-connect.com/register_tutor.htm just for abacus training.
