P2 Math - General Discussion

I received my boy term test paper yesterday for parent signature.
Just to share the type of mistake that he made.
So far only one question was did wrongly:
2 is _____ less than 6.
The answer is 4 but he wrote the answer 8.
He asked me why his answer was wrong and I told him "less than" means lesser, and lesser means the answer must be less than 6. He still blur blur… -
Let me share my dd P1 maths question.
Pencil + Pencil = 14
Pencil + Heart = 16
Heart = __
Note: Pencil & Heart were represented in picture in the actual test paper. -

This is an evergreen question.Let me share my dd P1 maths question.
Pencil + Pencil = 14
Pencil + Heart = 16
Heart = __
Note: Pencil & Heart were represented in picture in the actual test paper.
The number gets bigger in P2.
Same question style with different

What do you think? :please:
Easier to find for others navigating for P1 Math

I thought this is the worst kept secret. Everyone knows. -

for test papers. I think it is better to simply post to the forum the specific questions that you have problems understanding or that you want to verify the answer with (some of those answers provided by the vendors are notoriously horrible). We KiasuParents love to work on these questions because we also want our children to learn to handle all the tricky questions.
So it is, as sashimi says, manage by exception. -

I am using this method to teach my gal and so far, she has no problem doing the problems:-[Moderator's note: Topics merged.]
Anyone can help me...
my son is confused with such problem.
Here is the questions
1. 5 is 1 less than _
2. _ is 1 less than 3
My son just take the numbers and start to minus.
For Q2, that's okay but for Q1, he will get the wrong answer.
Can anyone suggests a method to coach him?
5 is 1 less than ___________
5 = 1 - _____ (I will get her to write the number sentence on top)
So she can see that a number minus 1 = 5
______ is 1 less than 3
______ = 1 - 3 (so she can see that 3 - 1 = ?)
The above method so far works for my gal. She can get them all correct. -

I agree with Chief. So bring it on already, parents!

Hi bitchymum, great that you can find a way for your kid to understand the question! …but the potential problem would be that you need to undo that way when she starts learning negative number, (? = 1 - 3; then ? = -2 not 2 and 1-3 is not equals to 3 - 1 ) …after using this technique for so long it might become ingrown then very tough to undo… I hope don’t mind me pointing this out…

Thanks, in fact I was worried that she might confuse too .
For ? = 1 - 3, I get her to read backwards meaning read from 3 - 1 = ?. So far, this is the best method cos at least she can get all correct after all the practise.
