          after looking thru that thread, its still doesnt reveal the answer :oops:

          a) 2 is ___ less than 10
          b) 3 is 4 less than ____

          so i read over & over again (read: slow digestion) & after cracking my brains, can i finally say the answer is as follows:

          a) 8
          b) 7

          (a) we use subtraction & (b) we use addition but how can we teach the kids using K2/P1's language 🤷

          looks like i got to prepare a list of sums & get DS to do it, then slowly try & explain to him... 🙏

            Solving questions on 'more than' and 'less than' sums


            Type 1
            _______ is 5 less than 12.
            Cover up 5. The question will then be read as ______ is less than 12. Therefore _____is the smaller number. To find the smaller number, we always need to subtract. The answer is then 12 - 5 = 7.

            Similarly
            _______ is 2 more than 12
            Cover up 2 again. The question will then be read as ______ is more than 12. Therefore ____ is the bigger number. To find the bigger number, we always need to add. The answer is then 12 + 2 = 14.

            Type 2
            3 is 4 less than ____
            Cover up 4. The question will then be read as 3 is less than ______. Therefore 3 is the smaller number and ______ is the bigger number. To find the bigger number, we always need to add. Therefore the answer is 3+ 4 = 7

            10 is 6 more than _____
            Similarly cover up 6. The question will then be read as 10 is more than ______. Therefore 10 is the bigger number and ______ is the smaller number. To find the smaller number, we always need to subtract. Therefore the answer is 10 -6 = 4

            Type C
            2 is ___ less than 10.
            In this question, we are comparing the 2 numbers, 2 and 10. 2 is less than 10 but by how much? To find the answer, we use the bigger number minus the smaller number, that is, 10 - 2 = 8.

            10 is ______ more than 4.
            In this question, we are comparing the 2 numbers, 10 and 4.
            10 is more than 4 but by how much? To find the answer, we again use the bigger number minus the smaller number, that is, 10 - 4 = 6.

                  every 5 to 7 years, MOE may revise Maths curriculum.
                  from 2013 onwards, could be new changes to Maths curriculum methodology.

                  some schools in P1 - later part of the year, Term 4 onwards, pupils are taught ‘Bar Modeling’.

                  a powerful new concept newly introduced to schools, solve word problems.

                  why ? because it is visual !

                  when is visual, pupils can ‘see’. Pupils thus find easier to understand, grasp complex, abstract Maths concepts more confidently.

                  this is a new move invented recently – move away from the old, traditional ‘Algebra’ method of solving Maths, where pupils tend to get confused, lost, don’t know how to begin / solve, esp. if the question gets complicated.

                  to tackle word problems proficiently, 2 types of skill set are required nowadays (both English and Maths skills), from a child:-

                  i) the ability to read & comprehend the qn in English,
                  ii) the ability to interpret the figures given & then apply the correct Maths concept.

                  some schools have started.

                  may attend ‘Maths workshop for Parents on Maths Problem Solving, using the 'Model Method’, by Dr. Yeap Ban Har.

                  can download his powerpoint slides, print out in color.
                  Questions and answers are found together, inside his slides.

                  learn to help your child solve Maths problems, using 'Model' method.

                  first part of his workshop focus on the basic model.
                  second part focus on advanced skills needed for solving challenging problems.

                  who is Dr. Yeap ?

                  Dr. Yeap Ban Har is a faculty leader at the National Institute of Education (NIE), Mathematics department. He taught at NIE, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore) for more than ten years, to trainee teachers.

                  Dr. Yeap holds a Master of Education, a Master of Arts in Southeast Asian studies, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Phd) in Mathematics Education. He received the Excellence in Teaching Commendation award, from the university in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

                      I thought the current math curriculum in school is using 'model' to solve word problems?? Model is not the same as 'Bar modelling'?? :?
