Excellent choice for boys. Hands on learning, quality programmes and caring committed teachers. Firm but caring discipline. Never regretted putting my son here. Academic rigour is there.

Hi everyone. I’m considering MJS for my boy who will be entering P1 soon. I would like to solicit some feedback from existing parents of MJS:

              1. For boys taking Chinese as a Mother Tongue, is the school environment and teaching supporting the learning of the language well?

              2. How is the academic standard of the school?

              3. How are the teachers in the school, and how is the school culture?

Hi. Can anyone advise the guidelines on school shoes for MJS? Is it only fully white shoes allowed?

I was undecided which primary school I should apply for my son in my area and have read up different school websites, attended open houses, consulted many friends, parents whose children are studying in different schools currently and also looked at this forum for some comments & feedbacks. In the end, I am happy that my son got into montfort easily due to lack of popularity which I don't quite understand why.

I do hear some negative reviews from horses mouth about this school from my friend as his brother was in this school like hmmm 30 years! ago. Well, 30 years is a long time ago and now I actually do see good reviews from current parents on their school fb and google search so its probably time we should open up and give this school a chance.

Good review- I have another friend whose two sons are currently in the school and I heard they truly enjoy themselves in school with good and caring teachers. She is also happy with the school culture and teachers' support and she is very pleased with the principal too. She said academic rigour is there and she also shared some of the school materials for my reference; Listening comprehension assessment, english spelling sentences, chinese hypy and characters spelling and understanding worksheet.

I also contacted some parents on fb and they also shared good stories about the school. And well, I was on leave one of the days and actually waited outside the gate with some other parents to have a first hand encounters with the kids behaviours. Honestly, I can see the kids are properly taught (either by parents or school) how to behave and they exit the side gate in orderly manner and parents are also gracious. I do see international parents and kids crowd (both asians and Caucasians).

In terms of school curriculum, I am actually attracted by their boy centric education program. Boy-Centric Education (BCE) is the Teaching and Learning framework of this school. They have computer coding class, lego writing, robotics and 3D creation program. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/education/taught-to-build-their-own-dreams Personally I think coding and digital is the way to go for our children. I dont see this being offered in schools near my area so this add another tick in my checklist. In terms of CCA for p1, they have taekwondo, badminton (they won awards) and guitar. I shared photos and all these information with my son and he said he likes what he is seeing.

Seeing that my son will actually enjoy himself in this school at boy centric pace (boys are competitive in nature and needs alot of activities to drain their energy) and it address my concerns on future academic and networking (international crowd) areas, I applied and he got into this school.

I will update next time for the benefits of other parents as I find information is lacking in this forum for this school.

Hello All, it has been a quarter since my son entered the school so I am back to provide some updates for the benefits of parents whom may wanna consider MJS.

                      Observation
                      ------------------
                      1) Son is happy everyday and he tells me he enjoys going to school and likes his teachers and friends.

                      2) He made alot of friends and they call out one another names at the school gate every morning and waited for friends to enter school together

                      3) Teachers are caring and prompt in their reply and offer suggestions and feedbacks

                      4) Communications with the teachers are easy as they have online platform called "See Saw" which parents can also participate when teachers posted photos of the boys school activities. The teachers also communicate with the parents there regarding what to bring to school and what to take note of the next day- for example, today is spelling day and I have marked the book, parents please check, sign and let the boys return to class tomorrow.

                      5) The traffic marshalls are alert and responsible as they control the traffic. I feel safe to let my boy enter the school as there is a zebra crossing within the school compound

                      6) Strong parents support group and have some activities planned by them and communicated via WhatsApp group. Split based on class.

                      Academic
                      --------------
                      1) Weekly spelling for both languages chinese spelling include hypy. Not so sure about other languages.

                      2) Regular worksheets for the boys to complete in class and to bring home for parents to check and sign.

                      3) Have good online platforms for learning at own timing, homework and school holidays. Koobits for maths, arcade coding for enrichment, ezhishi web for chinese etc. My son knows some simple coding using the coding website now. I have no idea what is it… oh no… i better start learning and keep up.

                      4) Have assessment - something like a test with actual marking for maths, english, chinese. English and chinese involve listening, oral, writing and understanding. Listening and oral I believe are assessed based on teacher student daily interactions.

For english, the boys have passage reading record - with marking on errors, pronunciation etc. Parents are given the results and need to sign on the passage test paper.

                      5) Teachers will provide feedback on the boys’ performance and standard and offer suggestions for improvements.

                      Areas to improve
                      —‐------------------------------
Lack of food choices in canteen. Only 3 stalls are open. Parents are recommended to prepare some food and snacks for children if we like to. Hope to see more food stalls post covid - the stall owners are not earning enough now.

CCA updates are lacking. Just need to ask the teacher in charge for clarity.

So far, overall I am happy, my boy is happy.

Will provide some more updates as and when in future.

Oh ya… the school shoes need to be white (someone was asking previously).

Anything you want to know, pls ask, if I know the answer, will let you know.
