Hi - can I find out how is streaming done in from Pri 2 to 3 ? How do they allocate the classes ?

workingmum, according to my girl's teacher, they would have top 3 classes for P3, the rest of the classes will be randomly mixed. Thus, if the overall school position is in top 90, they will be in the top 3 classes.

I think top 3 classes extended from P3 to P6 (6A, 6B & 6C). If you look at the NCPS Top 10 PSLE students for 2010, 9 of them from Class 6A. Looking at the PSLE outcome, it keeps me wonder if school has poured all resources into these 3 classes (cream of the crop) to the extend that other mixed-results classes are neglected. 9 out of 10 from same class...humm.
Timtim, where are we able to view the past PSLE outcome?

I think the real test for grouping pupils into foundation or standard will now come only in P4.

With the new curriculum and all the bite-size accessments that will be included into the SA1 & SA2 for P2s, the allocation of pupils based on results will not be truely reflective of the pupils’ academic performances anymore.

And even at P5, the class allocation might also be skewed because, for eg. Pupil A scores all high band 1 and is recommended to take higher chinese (a class can have a mix of pupils taking higher chinese and standard chinese), and Pupil B is not recommended for higher chinese. Now if Pupil B’s parents opt for him to take HCL, he will be in a different class from Pupil A. If Pupil C scores all Band 1 and does not take HCL, Pupil C might be in a mix class with Pupil A.

So with the current system, there is no more clear indicator which is the best class. Traditionally, yes, the top class might be from A - C, but from this year onwards, I find it hard to conclude.

Also, good teachers may not be in teaching the best class. And again, it also depends on your definition of good teachers. Good teachers = teachers who can drill and derive results? Or good teachers = teachers that can make a positive difference in your child’s learning attittudes? Or good teachers = teachers who can engage and motivate your child?

My preference for good teachers are those who can make a postive difference in my child’s learning attitude. Does my child need to be in the top class? Not necessary for me.

Just my personal opinions.

VJA:
P2 is a critical yr when they will stream for P3.

It should be the top 120 as the class size increase to around 40 in P3.
I think the rest will also be distribute based on their results and not be mixed. School position will be indicated at the end of SA2 in the report book.
The school really focus on the top 3 or 2 classes only.
There are some parents not very happy with such arrangements when they know that A-C classes have this have that, but not others
From P2 to P3, among the top 120 students, the 40 students with best scores in Maths will be in 3A, the other 80 in B and C. I don't think the rest of the students are distributed based on their results.

Pappy,

I find the management / staff prompt in their reply when we e mail them. Communication is easy. A simple feedback from DD to teacher and i see immediate response from the teacher.

Maybe i’m out of the school system for too long and every school is doing it. However, i find it tough being a parent nowadays. The teachers expect parents to sign and acknowledge for almost every single piece of work DD does. Misbehaviour (like talking in class) was written in comm book. I get direct communication from the form teacher when i pick DD up from school. I am not complaining. I’m glad the school keeps parents updated about everything. PSG and alumni is pretty strong in the school too. So if you join PSG, there is a greater chance to learn about the school.

BTW, does everyone knows that the school will be organising a food and fun fair this year. I think it will be held on a Friday, July if i remember correctly.

U can also trying login at http://www.etutoronline.net w BC # in UPPER CASE for both login & password.

DS was told to do every weekend, starting from last week. However, just realised from the login handout given only ytd, that he have been doing the 1st 2 lessons in the wrong tab! His teacher had guided them once but think he couldn't remember the correct tab.
Anyway, I preferred last yr's paper version as he could practise his writing at the same time & didn't hv to stare at the screen.

There is homework on eZhishi. My son did the e-Magazine 2011-2 online exercises (there are 2) last week. Besides exercises, there are also games and others. Some I think they already went thru in school. This week if not wrong, should be 2011-3 e-Mag. I have no issue login in all this time.

With regard to this online exercise, I think it's better if teacher can give written instructions to parents. It's so confusing and so many versions of info flowing around and I also not sure if my son did the right ones. Then my son comes back with new eZhishi online homework and I also can't be sure if what he said is really correct. Sigh.
